Spoilers for the Squid Game Season 3 finale. Player 333, Lee Myung-gi, dies in the final Sky Squid Game. He turns on the baby to claim the prize, fights Gi-hun, and falls from the tower when the jacket linking them tears. Gi-hun survives that fall long enough to make a final sacrifice so the baby can win. Calling Myung-gi’s fate the season’s “ultimate twist” is an interpretation of the betrayal—not a claim that every viewer found it unpredictable.
How Myung-gi dies in the final game
Myung-gi is Player 333, played by Yim Si-wan. Netflix identifies him among the season’s returning contestants in its Season 3 announcement.
The final challenge, Sky Squid Game, unfolds across three towers marked with a square, triangle, and circle. Contestants must push someone from each tower, and a player has to press a button to begin the later rounds. By the last tower, only Gi-hun, Myung-gi, and the baby remain.
Myung-gi tries to eliminate the child and take the prize. Gi-hun fights him to protect the baby, and both men go over the edge. Gi-hun catches the ledge and briefly clings to Myung-gi by his jacket. The fabric tears; Myung-gi falls to his death. Gi-hun then gives his life so the baby can survive and win. Netflix’s finale explainer recounts the sequence.

Why the baby is in the final tower
The baby is Jun-hee and Myung-gi’s child, Player 222. Earlier, Jun-hee is injured during Jump Rope and entrusts the baby to Gi-hun so the child can cross. When Gi-hun considers returning for her, Jun-hee recognizes that he may not make it back—and that the baby could be eliminated too. She steps off the platform, allowing the child to continue.
Later, the Front Man saves the baby and leaves the child and the prize with his brother, Jun-ho. The baby reaches the final game because of Jun-hee’s choice and Gi-hun’s protection; Myung-gi’s attempt to claim the prize puts that survival at risk.

What the betrayal means—and what the creators say
Yim Si-wan told TheWrap that Myung-gi initially wanted to leave the game with Jun-hee alive. In the actor’s interpretation, her death removes that motivation and sends Myung-gi into a spiral in which he loses his sense of justice, morality, and responsibility.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk offers a broader thematic reading in Netflix Tudum’s interview about the ending: Myung-gi represents selfishness and greed, putting immediate personal gain ahead of a child’s future. That is the creator’s interpretation, not an objective diagnosis of the character.

Hwang has also said the baby represents future generations, and that Gi-hun’s sacrifice is meant to express responsibility toward them: “I believe we also have the responsibility and duty to try everything that we can in our power to leave a better world for the future generation,” he told Tudum. He described the ending’s hope this way: “I eventually came to believe that, no matter how hopeless and dark the world may seem, perhaps we still have a chance if we can find even a glimpse of hope within ourselves.” Those statements explain the intended contrast: Myung-gi chooses the prize for himself, while Gi-hun chooses a future for someone else.

Netflix premiered Season 3 exclusively on its platform on June 27, 2025, according to its announcement. Tudum describes the sixth episode as the planned definitive series finale and says the thriller will not return for Season 4.
