How John Dutton is written out
Kevin Costner does not return as John for season 5B. Instead of showing him continue in the role, the story begins after his death. ABC News reported that Costner said he would not return for “season 5B or into the future” (ABC News).
The death happens off-screen. Executive producer and director Christina Voros said in a December 17, 2024 interview that John’s death was always planned for the final season, though the way it happened needed adjustment after Costner’s departure. As Voros put it: “The ‘what’ of the end of the season was always planned. The ‘how’ may have needed to be adjusted” (Christina Voros interview).
What the characters first believe—and what is revealed
John’s family and the authorities initially confront his death as an apparent suicide. A security transponder outage and missing footage around the time of death complicate that account. The later reveal is that Sarah arranged John’s murder (ABC News; episode recap).

The revelation intensifies the conflict between Jamie and his siblings, Beth and Kayce. John’s death is therefore not only the event that removes him from the story; it becomes a catalyst for the family struggle that follows (ABC News).

John is buried alongside his wife Evelyn and their son Lee. In the finale, Kayce sells the ranch to Thomas Rainwater under conditions intended to keep it from development and preserve a place there for Kayce’s family (finale coverage).
