The episode opens on an image of a flooded Washington Monument, then turns to Cal. He once wanted to leave his family’s oil business to teach, but his father, Kane, pushed him toward politics. Years later, Cal is president and living with the consequences of the choices that brought people into the underground city. His teenage son Jeremy confronts him over his part in those events.
Kane’s dementia makes his memories difficult to follow, but a confused remark about a lost expedition gives Cal a clue. Using Kane’s clearance to access classified files, Cal finds evidence about a surface mission: Billy reported that the team and a surviving woman were in sight, but Sinatra ordered them killed. The discovery changes Cal’s understanding of the hidden history—and leads him to warn Gabriela and confront Sinatra.

Why Cal’s family history makes the discovery personal
Kane’s approval remains out of reach
Cal’s search for the truth is bound up with his long effort to earn his father’s approval. He asks Kane whether he ever made him proud. Kane answers, “You never did anything I didn’t do for you,” a response that lands as another rejection. Later, when Kane mistakes Jeremy for Cal, he apologizes and briefly expresses the pride and regret Cal had wanted to hear. The moment offers emotional release, but it comes through a confused memory rather than a clear reconciliation.
Cal’s frustration is summed up in his line to Kane, as reported by TVLine: “I lived my life as your chess piece.” Kane actor Gerald McRaney described the character in a TV Insider interview published February 11, 2025, as “a complex character to be sure, and no, he is not the nicest guy ever to come down the pike.”

Cal tries to repair other relationships
Cal also struggles to define his relationship with Robinson. He offers to take her shooting and says he wants a real relationship after his presidency. With Jeremy, he tries to reconnect even as his son’s anger over Cal’s role in the underground city complicates the effort. These scenes make the day’s political revelation part of a larger reckoning: Cal is trying to make a consequential choice while facing the damage and distance in his family.

Kane later remembers seeing “her,” but the episode’s events do not establish exactly what that memory means or how it connects to the surviving woman. Likewise, the tablet’s presence with Presley raises questions without explaining how it got there. The episode supplies a major answer about Sinatra’s order while leaving the investigation—and the meaning of its final clues—unresolved.
