It is a scene in a modern video game—not an episode from ancient Greek mythology. The game’s Spartan hero Kratos is also distinct from the ancient Greek personification of strength who shares his name.
What happens in God of War III?
Kratos meets Aphrodite in her chamber. She invites him to share her bed, and the game presents the encounter as an optional player interaction. Afterward, Aphrodite directs him to Hephaestus. This game-specific account is described by the fan-maintained God of War Wiki; it should not be confused with an ancient account or treated as evidence about Aphrodite’s later fate in the game continuity.

Is the encounter part of Greek mythology?
No. The Kratos–Aphrodite encounter is a fictional scene from God of War III. The ancient sources discussed here tell different stories about Aphrodite and do not describe her being with Kratos.
Aphrodite and Ares in Hesiod
In Hesiod’s Theogony, Aphrodite and Ares are named as the parents of Fear, Terror, and Harmonia. That genealogy identifies a relationship between those deities; it does not involve Kratos. Read the Center for Hellenic Studies translation of Hesiod’s Theogony.
#1 Best Overall
- True to the series roots, the four pillars of game play - brutal combat, intricate puzzles, exploration of awe-inspiring worlds
- God of War III is the epic conclusion to the Greek mythological trilogy, which will complete Kratos' story
- New deadly weapons like the Cestus, powerful metal gauntlets with devastating strength, and other brutal instruments of war
- The menacing creatures of Greek mythology can now be manipulated against their will, to cross chasms, inflict blind rage against enemies
- God of War III picks up exactly where God of War II left off ? Kratos must take his quest for vengeance to the very stronghold of the Zeus.
Aphrodite and Anchises in the Homeric Hymn
The Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite tells of Aphrodite’s encounter with Anchises and her effort to manage the consequences of revealing her identity. It is a separate ancient story, unrelated to the video-game scene. The Center for Hellenic Studies translation of the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite provides the text.
Aphrodite, Ares, and Hephaestus in the Odyssey
The familiar story of Hephaestus catching Aphrodite and Ares together belongs to the Odyssey tradition. It is another distinct myth, not an account of Kratos and Aphrodite. The available summary is not the primary passage, so it is not used here to quote or reconstruct the episode.

Which Kratos is meant?
In Greek tradition, Kratos—also rendered Cratus or Cratos—is a personification of strength. In Hesiod’s account of Prometheus, he appears as an enforcer of Zeus’ order. The protagonist of God of War is a modern fictional Spartan character who shares the name, not that ancient personification. A secondary reference on the mythological figure is available through Kratos (mythology).
