On November 5, 2024, Maye Musk criticized a rumored New York Times article about her son, Elon Musk, and referred to reporter Ryan Mac as “American Vietnamese.” Her post connected his heritage to her claim that her book was a bestseller in Vietnam. Mac and other journalists questioned why his ethnicity was relevant to the reporting. News accounts said the post was later deleted, though they did not establish when.
What Maye Musk posted
On November 5, 2024, U.S. election day, Maye Musk wrote about a rumored New York Times article by Ryan Mac that she described as an “Elon hit piece,” according to The Independent and Futurism. The two outlets reproduced her post as saying: “Sadly, Ryan is an American Vietnamese reporter. My book is a bestseller in Vietnam. I don’t think my readers will believe the article if it’s hateful and/or dishonest.”
The post therefore did more than criticize anticipated coverage: it explicitly introduced Mac’s Vietnamese heritage and linked it to Musk’s claim about her book’s readership. That claim about bestseller status is what Musk wrote, as reproduced by the outlets; the reports do not independently establish a sales ranking.
Why the reference drew criticism
Mac questioned the relevance of his ethnicity to his work. Futurism quoted his response on Threads: “Why did she bring up my race and what was sad about it? Why was she digging into my race? And what does my race have anything to do with my profession?”

The Independent also quoted NBC News reporter Tyler Kingkade saying, “Calling out a reporter for their ethnic heritage is never appropriate.” The outlet reported other critical reactions as well. Some coverage and commentators characterized the post as racist or racially insensitive; those are attributed judgments about the wording, not a separate factual finding.
What happened afterward
The Independent and Futurism reported that Musk deleted the post. Futurism said screenshots circulated, including one Mac posted, but the reports do not establish the precise deletion time.

What is and is not established
- The reported post concerned a rumored Times article by Mac and described it as an “Elon hit piece.”
- Its reproduced wording referred to Mac as an “American Vietnamese reporter” and invoked Musk’s book and its claimed popularity in Vietnam.
- Mac and other journalists publicly questioned or criticized the relevance of his heritage to the story.
- The cited reports do not establish whether the rumored article appeared as described, when Musk deleted her post, or a definitive primary-source archive of the original post. The accounts document what the outlets reported and reproduced; they do not independently verify the original X or Threads posts.
Background on the book
The Independent identifies the book Musk invoked as her 2019 memoir, A Woman Makes a Plan: Advice for a Lifetime of Adventure, Beauty, and Success. The book reference formed part of her post’s explanation for why she believed readers in Vietnam might doubt the anticipated article if it were “hateful and/or dishonest.”
