In interviews reported in 2024, she described the area as dark and said part of the balcony was unmarked and not cordoned off. Coverage also reported serious injuries to her hip and shoulder, surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation. The details about the deck are Lewis’s account; the reporting cited here does not establish an independent safety investigation or finding of fault.
Where and when did the fall happen?
Lewis said the accident happened in November 2022, during a trip that included Cape Town and Rwanda before she traveled to Tanzania’s Serengeti on safari. According to the Los Angeles Times and The Independent’s 2024 accounts, she had arrived at a hotel shortly before the fall.
She said she went onto a deck after dark to look at an infinity pool. Lewis described the area as pitch black and said she had not been given a tour of the room. She also said part of the balcony was not cordoned off and had no warning sign. Those descriptions are her reported account, not findings from an independent inspection.
How did Lewis describe the fall?
Lewis told Robin Roberts that she did not realize she was falling until it happened: “In pitch black, I didn’t know I was falling. Nothing would move.” She said she fell about 10 feet into a dry ravine filled with boulders, stones and sharp rocks. She described her right hip taking the impact and her shoulder hitting a stone. The Los Angeles Times and The Independent reported the approximate height and circumstances from her interviews.
