The change was intended to let writers earn from early access without making a story paid-only. The mechanics below describe the launch announcement, not confirmed current terms.
What happened to Wattpad Paid Stories?
Wattpad said Paid Stories, launched in 2019, had paid millions to authors. The company also acknowledged a tradeoff: writers could keep a story free to pursue a larger audience or monetize it while risking slower growth. Originals was announced as the replacement, pairing paid early access with a path to free reading. Wattpad described the aim as easing that choice; it did not provide evidence that every author’s audience or earnings improved. Wattpad’s October 3, 2023 announcement and TechCrunch’s coverage that day explain the transition.
This was a change to Wattpad’s paid-story program, not an announcement that all paid reading on Wattpad had ended. Originals retained a paid option for readers who wanted chapters ahead of the free release.
How did Wattpad Originals work at launch?
For ongoing Originals, the October 2023 announcement said readers could unlock new chapters early with Coins or a Wattpad Premium+ subscription. Readers who did not pay could wait for free chapters. Wattpad said most stories would add one free chapter each week as new chapters arrived, with only the ten most recently published chapters behind the paywall. Completed Originals would have a free portion, and readers could see how long they would wait for the next free chapter. These are launch-era terms; the announcement does not establish that the same rules apply now.

TechCrunch reported Premium+ at $7.49 per month at launch. That is a historical reported price, not a current quote; prices and availability may vary, and the reviewed announcement does not establish current regional terms. Check Wattpad’s current subscription and story details before deciding whether to pay. TechCrunch’s launch coverage gives the dated price report.
Can you read Wattpad Originals for free?
Under the launch model, yes: readers could wait for eligible chapters to become free, and completed Originals were announced to include a free portion. Paying was the route to early access, not the only announced way to read. The wait, free portion, and current access rules may differ by story or have changed since launch; consult the story page for its displayed terms rather than assuming the 2023 schedule still applies.

What did the change mean for writers?
Wattpad presented Originals as a way to combine reader growth through free access with revenue from readers who chose to unlock chapters early. The company said the program included curation by its content team and editorial support and feedback during writing. TechCrunch reported that Originals was invite-only at launch, with editorial experts selecting stories using reader-engagement metrics. It was therefore not presented as an automatic monetization switch available to every writer.
Wattpad’s press archive includes a September 2024 call for pitches, but that historical notice does not confirm whether applications are open now or what current eligibility requires. Writers should check Wattpad’s press archive and current official creator information before preparing a pitch. The launch announcement also mentioned brand partnerships and adaptations through Wattpad WEBTOON Studios as broader opportunities; it did not promise that these options were available to every author.
