The Boeing 747 broken up for Universal Studios Hollywood’s War of the Worlds crash set was a former All Nippon Airways aircraft: 747SR-81 JA8147, later registered N219BA. It was cut into sections and transported to the studio, where the production filmed the set over three days in January 2005. The remains were documented on the Studio Tour in 2007, but available reporting does not establish whether the same pieces are still on the route today.
Which Boeing 747 was used in War of the Worlds?
The aircraft was a Boeing 747SR-81 built in 1980, manufacturer serial number 22293. It flew for All Nippon Airways as JA8147 and was later registered N219BA. The South African Airways Museum Society’s preserved-aircraft compilation lists the type, serial number and later registration; a separate aircraft listing identifies its ANA registration and says its last flight was in March 2004.
How did the plane become a Hollywood crash set?
For Steven Spielberg’s 2005 film War of the Worlds, the former ANA Jumbo was cut into pieces and transported to Universal Studios Hollywood. The resulting outdoor set represented the wreckage of an airliner. Aviationist journalist David Cenciotti reported that filming at the location took place over three days in January 2005. His account and photographs of the set describe the production and its use of the genuine airframe.
A staged wreck, not an actual accident site
The pieces were concentrated in a relatively small area, Cenciotti observed, rather than spread across a broad debris field as might follow a real crash. That compact arrangement reflects a film set designed for a scene; it should not be mistaken for an authentic accident site. The sources do not give a reason the production chose this particular airframe.

What happened to the 747 afterward?
Cenciotti wrote that he photographed the wreckage during a Universal Studios Hollywood tour in 2007: “I took the following pictures in 2007, during the Universal Studios tour in Hollywood, CA, USA.” That is evidence that the set was visible on the tour at that time—not proof of its present condition or location.
The available records do not establish whether every section remains on the current tour route, or trace the eventual disposition of each piece. They support saying the aircraft was broken up and used for the film set, but not that the complete aircraft survives or that visitors can still see the same wreckage today.
