Tom Smith left the story of his split from Gas Monkey Garage deliberately brief. Asked whether it was contentious, he said: “It was time to part ways, and I will leave it at that.” The available sources do not establish a more specific reason for his departure or confirm what work he does today.
Tom Smith’s role on Misfit Garage
Discovery describes Misfit Garage as following the crew at Fired Up Garage in Dallas as they work on custom street rods. Smith was part of that crew. Discovery’s official show page currently lists an episode titled “The Story of FU.”
Smith had also been associated with Gas Monkey Garage. Discovery’s Fast N’ Loud page later identified him as a “Former Monkey” and listed an episode called “Tom Takes Over.” That wording establishes his former status, but does not explain the circumstances or timing of his departure.
Why did Tom Smith leave?
The clearest first-person account is Smith’s response in a Hollywood Soapbox interview. Asked whether the Gas Monkey split was contentious, he said: “It was time to part ways, and I will leave it at that.” He did not give a reason, say whether the departure was voluntary, or specify exactly when it happened.

A Warner Bros. Discovery season announcement dated April 13, 2018 names Smith among the Fired Up Garage crew alongside Thomas Weeks, John Klump, and Josh Paris. It also refers to a “team member’s departure,” but does not identify that person in the release wording. It therefore cannot be used to conclude that Smith was the unnamed person or to explain his split.
Did Tom Smith return to Gas Monkey Garage?
On December 5, 2023, Gas Monkey Garage published “The Return of Tom Smith | Beer:30”, describing Smith sitting down with Richard Rawlings to revisit his years as a face of Misfit Garage. This confirms a later public appearance together; it does not establish that Smith returned as an employee or business partner.

Where is Tom Smith now?
The sources cited here do not confirm Smith’s present-day occupation or location. His 2023 appearance shows that he spoke with Rawlings about his television years, but it is not evidence of his current work. Claims that give a definite explanation for his departure or describe a specific current job go beyond what these sources establish.
