SPARE pitched a way to get cash at participating shops without using a traditional ATM. Its founder, D’Ontra Hughes, accepted Mark Cuban’s offer on Shark Tank, but later reporting says the deal never closed. Today, SPARE describes itself as a virtual ATM network linking financial-institution apps with retailers’ point-of-sale systems; whether its original standalone consumer app is still available is not firmly established.
What was SPARE’s Shark Tank pitch?
D’Ontra Hughes appeared on Season 10, Episode 20, which aired April 21, 2019, according to AllSharkTankProducts. The service aimed to make cash available through participating retail locations rather than a conventional ATM.
The original app workflow was straightforward: a customer entered the amount of cash requested, received directions to a registered shop and a one-time PIN, then presented that PIN to the shopkeeper to collect the money.
Did Mark Cuban’s deal close?
Hughes asked for $500,000 in exchange for 3.5% equity. He accepted Cuban’s reported counteroffer of $500,000 for 12% equity plus 2% advisory shares. However, later accounts say the agreement did not close and Cuban did not invest. SlashGear and Shark Tank Insights report the deal terms and non-closure; the reason it fell through is not established in those sources.

What does SPARE do now?
SPARE’s current website presents the business as a virtual ATM network connecting a financial institution’s app to a participating retailer’s point-of-sale (POS) system. A customer requests cash access through a bank or credit union app, chooses a retailer, and completes the transaction at the register. The company markets its service to banks, credit unions, retailers, and resellers, and lists an integration for Clover POS. These details describe the company’s public positioning, not independently verified usage or market reach. See SPARE’s official website.
How does the current model differ from the original app?
| Aspect | Original pitch | Current public description |
|---|---|---|
| Customer interface | SPARE’s standalone consumer app | A bank or credit union app |
| Where cash is collected | A participating registered shop | A nearby participating retailer |
| Transaction hardware | A one-time PIN shown to the shopkeeper | The retailer’s existing POS system |
| Primary audience | Consumers seeking cash access | Financial institutions, retailers, and resellers |
The comparison reflects the company’s description of its present model; it does not establish how widely the service is deployed.

Is the SPARE app still available?
BGR reported in February 2026 that SPARE’s app was missing from Apple and Android app stores while the company retained an online presence: BGR. SPARE’s current website describes an app-to-POS network but does not clearly say whether the original standalone consumer app remains available. The dated app-store report should not be treated as confirmation of its status today.
