The book confirms Crane’s execution but does not say how he dies. The first film shows him taken to a room with nightlock berries, implying a method without showing his death.
Why did Snow execute Seneca Crane?
Crane is the Head Gamemaker of the 74th Hunger Games. When Katniss and Peeta threaten to eat poisonous nightlock berries rather than kill one another, Crane allows both to live. Snow sees that outcome as a failure to control the Games and a challenge to the Capitol’s authority.
In Suzanne Collins’s Catching Fire, Snow tells Katniss, “If the Head Gamemaker, Seneca Crane, had had any brains, he’d have blown you to dust right then.” Katniss understands from Snow’s manner that Crane has been executed. KVPR’s 2009 review reproduces the passage.
Does the book say how Seneca Crane was executed?
No. The novel establishes that Crane was executed, but it does not identify the method. It does not confirm that he was hanged, forced to take poison, or killed with nightlock berries.

What does the film show?
The first film adds a scene in which guards escort Crane into a room containing a bowl of nightlock berries. That image strongly implies that Snow arranged a forced death using the poison associated with the Games, but the film cuts away without showing Crane die or confirming that he eats the berries. The University of Alaska Fairbanks English department’s summary notes this distinction between the novel and the film.

Crane is the Head Gamemaker responsible for overseeing the Games. In an interview on her official author site, Suzanne Collins identifies him among Snow’s former peers and describes his role as Head Gamemaker; the interview does not add details about his execution. Suzanne Collins Books’ interview provides that context.
