PerthNow reported in December 2025 that Perth mother Chloe Mowday became critically ill after nose and eyelid procedures in Vietnam. The latest case-specific update located, published on 6 January 2026, said she had returned to Australia shortly before Christmas and was awake, talking and breathing independently, but remained in intensive care. That report does not establish her condition today.
What happened after Chloe Mowday’s surgery in Vietnam?
In a report published on 8 December 2025, PerthNow said Mowday had travelled to Vietnam with family for a holiday and planned nose and eyelid surgery. Her brother told the outlet that within hours her organs shut down, she was resuscitated while being taken to hospital, and she was placed in an induced coma and on life support. The family said it did not know what had caused the organ failure.
On 12 December, PerthNow reported that her condition remained serious and that she had undergone further surgery to address a spreading infection. Her brother told the paper she had pneumonia, sepsis, kidney problems requiring daily dialysis, and needed blood transfusions. These are updates attributed to her family in news reports, not details from a published clinical record.
Is Chloe Mowday back in Australia?
Yes. PerthNow reported on 6 January 2026 that Mowday had arrived in Australia on a medical aircraft shortly before Christmas. Her brother said she was awake, talking and breathing on her own, though she remained in intensive care and faced a long recovery. This is the latest case-specific update located; it should not be read as confirmation of her health on 8 October 2026.

What is known about the cause and investigation?
The reports reviewed do not establish why Mowday became critically ill, identify a specific infection or procedural error, or name the surgeon or facility. PerthNow’s initial report said Vietnamese police were investigating, but no outcome of that investigation was reported in the case updates cited here. An investigation being reported is not a finding of fault.
PerthNow reported an air-ambulance quote of A$125,000 in December 2025. That was a historical amount attributed to the family’s account, not a current evacuation price or a general estimate.

What should you check before cosmetic surgery overseas?
Australian Government Smartraveller advises people considering medical tourism to research the destination, doctor, hospital and procedure; speak with their Australian doctor; check qualifications and accreditation; understand legal rights; and plan follow-up care. It also warns that procedures can cause complications or death, including for people who are young, fit and healthy.
- Surgeon: Confirm the practitioner’s qualifications and relevant experience through reliable sources.
- Facility: Check hospital accreditation, infection-control information, and what care is available if complications arise.
- Aftercare: Establish who will provide post-operative reviews, how long you should remain nearby, and how care will be coordinated after returning home.
- Legal protections: Understand the local complaints process and what legal rights or remedies apply if care goes wrong.
- Insurance: Tell your insurer about the planned procedure, ask specifically about complications, post-operative care and evacuation, and read the policy disclosure statement for exclusions.
Smartraveller’s medical-tourism guidance, last updated 18 August 2026, states: “Basic travel insurance policies rarely cover medical tourism.” A standard policy should not be assumed to pay for planned surgery, treatment of a complication, or evacuation; confirm the wording with the insurer before travelling.

What are the medical-care and evacuation considerations in Vietnam?
Australia’s current Vietnam travel advice says medical-care standards vary and are generally below Australian standards. It says hospitals may require payment upfront, and serious illness may require evacuation to Bangkok or Singapore, which can be very expensive. This country-level guidance does not establish the standard of care or what happened at the unnamed facility in Mowday’s case.
Smartraveller says Medicare does not cover medical treatment overseas and the Australian Government cannot pay medical bills or lend money. The traveller, family or insurer may therefore face overseas treatment and evacuation costs. Ask the insurer to explain precisely which costs are covered, under what conditions, and what limits or exclusions apply.

How common is medical travel among Australians?
An Australian Government Smartraveller article published on 20 August 2026 said “almost half of Australians have travelled or would consider travelling overseas for a medical procedure,” attributing the figure to travel-insurance research by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Insurance Council of Australia. The wording combines people who have travelled with those who would consider it; it does not mean that almost half have actually travelled for treatment.
