What Otis says to Cruz
Otis speaks to his close friend Cruz in Russian as he is dying. Cruz does not understand the words at the time; their meaning is revealed later: “Brother, I will be with you, always.” The line gives their friendship a final expression of connection even as Cruz is left to process the loss.
How the firehouse deals with the loss
Otis’s death is not treated as a one-episode shock and then forgotten. Chief Boden delivers a memorial speech, and the loss continues to shape the season. Cruz, Otis’s friend and roommate, is especially affected; later moments include him repairing Otis’s drone. TV Guide’s interview with showrunner Derek Haas discusses the intended aftermath.

Why Chicago Fire killed off Otis
Showrunner Derek Haas discussed the creative decision and how the death would resonate beyond the premiere in interviews with TV Insider and TV Guide. Haas said Arthur Forney, Wolf Films’ head of post-production, suggested having Otis’s final words be in Russian and revealing their meaning later. Haas recalled, “I knew it was a great idea so I was like, ‘Yes!’”
Those interviews explain the choice to use the Russian line and the plan for Otis’s absence to continue affecting the firehouse. They do not establish every detail of actor Yuri Sardarov’s personal reasons for leaving, so the on-screen explanation and the showrunner’s account are the clearest points to rely on.
