Navarro is alive during the investigation and saves Danvers, but the finale does not confirm whether she survives afterward. Danvers later says Navarro is missing, while reports of sightings—and the final image of her beside Danvers—leave her fate open to interpretation.
What happens to Navarro in the finale?
Navarro and Danvers enter the ice caves and find Raymond Clark in an underground laboratory. The evidence there links the lab to Annie Kowtok’s murder. Clark tells them Annie discovered the scientists’ work and destroyed their research, after which the scientists attacked her together. Before the detectives can take Clark in for an official confession, he dies in the storm.

The detectives also piece together what happened to the Tsalal scientists. Members of the local cleaning crew found evidence of Annie’s murder and brought other women to the station. The women forced the scientists outside, stripped them, and left them in the storm. Creator and showrunner Issa López frames their actions as letting the universe correct the harm, rather than directly killing the men.
What does Navarro’s vision mean?
During a vision, Navarro learns her Iñupiaq name from her mother. Actor Kali Reis described the moment as one in which Navarro feels she has a solid place and belongs to the community. Later, Navarro goes onto the ice and saves Danvers, who has followed a vision of her late son. Their experience brings the detectives closer, but the episode does not settle whether Navarro’s visions are supernatural or psychological.

Does Navarro die, or is she alive in the last scene?
The episode gives no definitive answer. In a later interview, Danvers is asked about the case and Navarro’s whereabouts. Navarro’s home is empty, and Danvers says she is missing; reports of sightings around Ennis continue. In the closing shot, Navarro appears beside Danvers at a lakeside home, but the scene does not establish whether she has returned after time away or is appearing spiritually.
López left the choice to viewers. Speaking to TheWrap on February 18, 2024, she said of Navarro’s fate: “Believe what you want to believe.” So the most accurate answer is that Navarro’s ending is intentionally ambiguous—not a confirmed death and not a confirmed survival beyond the final image.

What remains unexplained?
The finale does not reveal who placed Annie’s tongue at Tsalal. López told TheWrap, “That’s a question for the ages,” and said several explanations could work. The episode leaves the clue unresolved; it does not establish that Navarro, the mine, or a supernatural force was responsible.
