MTV’s original five VJs—Martha Quinn, Alan Hunter, Mark Goodman, J.J. Jackson and Nina Blackwood—went on to different careers in radio, television, acting and production. Jackson returned to radio and died in 2004. The faces viewers associate with MTV in the 1990s included later personalities such as Downtown Julie Brown and Kennedy; they were not part of an unchanged original lineup.
Who were MTV’s original VJs?
When MTV launched, its original VJ team consisted of Martha Quinn, Alan Hunter, Mark Goodman, J.J. Jackson and Nina Blackwood. As the network grew, other hosts and personalities became familiar to viewers, so “MTV VJs from the ’80s and ’90s” describes more than one generation. ABC News’s retrospective distinguishes the original five from later names viewers remember.
Where are the original five now?
Martha Quinn
Quinn left MTV around the start of the 1990s and continued in television and radio. Her later television appearances included The Bradys and Star Search. In a Television Academy oral-history interview conducted February 9, 2018, she discussed her departure from MTV and her work with SiriusXM and iHeartRadio. Those are documented career milestones, not confirmation of her current schedule.
Alan Hunter
Hunter moved into production after MTV, forming Hunter Films with his brother, and later hosted 1980s music programming on satellite radio. ABC News described him as a co-owner of the production company in its retrospective. The available reporting establishes that career arc, but not his present business status or current radio schedule. NPR’s “Where Are They Now?” feature also covers the original VJs’ later paths.

Mark Goodman
Goodman left MTV in 1987. He pursued acting, returned to television in work that included VH1 interviews and specials, and later hosted 1980s music programming on SiriusXM, according to retrospective coverage from NPR and ABC News. Those accounts document past work rather than a verified present-day schedule.
Nina Blackwood
Blackwood continued in entertainment after MTV, with acting and television hosting that included Solid Gold and Entertainment Tonight’s Rock Report, according to Biography.com. NPR reports stage work and syndicated radio programs; ABC News also places her among the former VJs who hosted 1980s music programming. These sources describe career history, not a confirmed current program listing.

J.J. Jackson
Jackson returned to Los Angeles radio after MTV and hosted several programs. NPR reported that he died of a heart attack in March 2004, aged 62. His story is therefore distinct from later appearances by surviving original VJs.
Which VJs are associated with MTV in the 1990s?
The network’s later years brought a wider roster of hosts and personalities. Downtown Julie Brown and Kennedy are two recognizable 1990s-era examples identified by ABC News; they were not members of the original five.

Kennedy’s later career included hosting the game show Friend or Foe, appearing on Best Week Ever, and beginning to host Fox News Channel’s Reality Remix in 2005, as NPR reported. Those are dated milestones, not evidence of her current role. These examples are selective rather than a complete list of everyone who appeared as an MTV VJ, host or reporter during the decade.
What did the original VJs say about their MTV years?
In a CBS News interview, Goodman recalled the singular nature of the job: “None of us ever had a job like that since.” Quinn described the early skepticism about MTV’s format: “But then of course, everyone said, ‘Who’s gonna watch videos over and over?’ Nobody.” The remarks capture two perspectives from the people who were there, rather than claims about every VJ’s experience. CBS News’s interview with the VJs also documents VJ: The Unplugged Adventures of MTV’s First Wave, an oral history co-written by four original VJs and Gavin Edwards.

How to read “where are they now” updates
Retrospectives are useful for tracing career paths, but a past radio show, business role or television appearance does not establish what someone is doing today. Quinn’s Television Academy interview is dated February 9, 2018, while the NPR and ABC News pieces are retrospective reporting; consult an official current listing before relying on a specific program or airtime.
