His career did not end altogether: he returned to television in 2013, later discussed the incident with Jerry Seinfeld, and revisited it again in his 2024 memoir, Entrances and Exits.
What happened at the Laugh Factory?
On November 17, 2006, Richards was performing at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles when he responded to hecklers with racist abuse. Video of the exchange circulated online. The episode became a defining public rupture in his career, following his years as Cosmo Kramer on Seinfeld from 1989 to 1998. (Los Angeles Times, November 2006)

How did Richards respond immediately?
Days after the incident, Richards apologized by satellite on The Late Show with David Letterman, appearing during Jerry Seinfeld’s segment. The Laugh Factory said it would not offer him more time in the spotlight and that he was no longer welcome at the club. Its statement said, “The Laugh Factory is a comedy club, not a forum for personal attacks.” (Los Angeles Times)
Did Michael Richards leave show business?
He withdrew from stand-up, but he did not stop working entirely. In 2012, speaking with Seinfeld on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Richards said he had not performed stand-up or developed new material since the incident. He described the effect on himself as severe: “I busted up after that event. It broke me down. It was a selfish response. I took it too personally.” He also said, “It’s not about me. It’s about them,” referring to the people affected by his conduct. (TV Guide, 2012)

Richards returned to a television series in 2013, playing Frank Baxter in TV Land’s Kirstie. His earlier sitcom, The Michael Richards Show, had been canceled in 2000—six years before the Laugh Factory incident—so that cancellation was not a consequence of the 2006 episode. In 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported that Richards welcomed occasional acting work. (Los Angeles Times, May 2024)
How has he discussed the incident since?
The 2012 conversation with Seinfeld was a notable early public return to the subject. Richards spoke about why he had not gone back to stand-up and how he wished he had handled the heckling differently. In 2024, he addressed the episode again in interviews and in his memoir, framing it as part of a longer period of reflection rather than a brief career setback.

In the Los Angeles Times interview, Richards said, “Public condemnation and humiliation are forms of justice.” He also described anger and irrationality as ongoing challenges in his life. These are his retrospective explanations, not an independent account of what caused the outburst. (Los Angeles Times, May 2024)

In the ABC interview, Richards described his time away from the industry as “Years and years of just being outside of show business.” The memoir and interviews renewed attention to his own account of the years after 2006, including family life, reflection and occasional acting. As of the available 2024 reporting, there is no established basis here to call him retired or to list newer projects.
