After Megan Leavey left the Marines in December 2007, Rex stayed in military service. Facial paralysis eventually ended his work as a military dog, and he was retired and released into Leavey’s care on April 6, 2012. They lived together for about eight months before Rex died in December 2012. Leavey later continued working with dogs; reports in 2018 described her as a veterinary technician, but they do not establish her current occupation.
Who were Megan Leavey and Rex?
Leavey was a Marine corporal and Rex’s handler. They served together on deployments to Iraq, where both were injured by an improvised explosive device in 2006. Leavey returned to the United States with Rex for recovery and physical therapy, and she received a Purple Heart. The U.S. Marine Corps’ account of Rex’s retirement describes the bond between handler and dog in Leavey’s own words: “You just have a special bond with your personal [MWD]. We did everything together and he was at my side 24/7.” The 2012 Marine Corps account records both their partnership and Rex’s retirement.
That account is useful for understanding why the story is about more than a reunion. Leavey described them as doing everything together, but her military career and Rex’s working life did not end at the same time. The injury brought them back to the United States for recovery, but after Leavey left the Marines, Rex remained on duty. Their separation was a consequence of his continuing military work, not evidence that their partnership had ended or that she had stopped trying to bring him home.
Why didn’t Leavey take Rex home when she left the Marines?
Leavey left the Marine Corps in December 2007, but Rex was still working at Camp Pendleton. Their separation was therefore not the end of his military career: Rex continued serving after their shared deployments, including stateside work. The New York State Senate’s later profile says his assignments included supporting Secret Service protection and that he had initially been deemed “not adoptable.”

That designation helps explain why Leavey could not simply take Rex with her when she left service. He was still considered a working military dog, and the release came only after his military career ended. Leavey pursued his adoption with help from veteran advocate Jerry Donnellan and Senator Chuck Schumer. The eventual release followed Rex’s retirement from military work, rather than Leavey taking him home immediately after her own discharge. The Senate’s 2018 announcement describes the effort to reunite them.
The key dates make the gap clear: Leavey left the Marines in December 2007, while Rex was not retired and officially released to her until April 6, 2012. Nearly four and a half years passed between those milestones. In the meantime, Rex’s service continued without Leavey as his handler. The available accounts do not describe every assignment or detail of the adoption process, so it is safest to say that she worked with advocates and Schumer to secure his release rather than assume a more specific legal or administrative procedure.
What did Rex do during his military service?
Rex’s work extended well beyond the deployments he shared with Leavey. Two public accounts give different measures of that service, so their figures are best kept in their original terms rather than treated as interchangeable totals.
- The Marine Corps reported that Rex provided more than 11,575 hours of military working-dog support and searched more than 6,220 vehicles. These totals appear in its 2012 retirement account.
- The New York State Senate’s 2018 profile said Rex searched 7,800 barracks rooms during 260 authorized health and comfort inspections. The Senate’s 2018 announcement separately described him and Leavey as having completed more than 100 missions together.
The figures describe several kinds of work across different accounts; the available sources do not present them as one unified measure. The hours of support and vehicle searches come from the Marine Corps’ 2012 account, while the barracks-room searches and inspections are specified in the Senate profile. The “more than 100 missions” figure is a separate description of Leavey and Rex’s work together, not a replacement for the broader service totals. Keeping those measurements distinct avoids implying that they cover identical periods or activities.

They also clarify that his record was not limited to the Iraq deployments remembered in the film. The Senate profile notes that Rex continued in service after Leavey’s discharge, including work described as supporting Secret Service protection. That continued work is central to why a reunion took years rather than happening as soon as Leavey left the Marines.

When did Megan Leavey get Rex back?
Facial paralysis ended Rex’s working-dog career. He retired and was officially released into Leavey’s care on April 6, 2012, at Camp Pendleton. At his retirement, Leavey said, “Hopefully his last days will be happy,” and described wanting a fenced yard, toys, and a comfortable bed for him. The date and her remarks are recorded in the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton Public Affairs report.
The reason for the transition matters: Rex was not simply reassigned to Leavey while he was still working. Facial paralysis ended his military working-dog duties, and retirement made the release possible. The Marine Corps account places the handover at Camp Pendleton and records Leavey’s hopes for his life afterward. Her comments focused on ordinary comforts—a fenced yard, toys, and a comfortable bed—rather than another assignment or a return to work.
This was the real timeline: Leavey’s discharge came in December 2007, and Rex’s retirement and adoption followed in April 2012. That distinction matters when comparing the historical record with the film’s dramatized story. Netflix describes the 2017 movie as based on Leavey and Rex’s true story, but that framing does not mean every scene or character detail reproduces documented events. Netflix also says the film is not based on a book; see its film information page.

For a comparison between the movie and real events, the clearest factual reference points are the dates and outcomes that are documented: Leavey left the Marines in 2007, Rex continued serving, he retired and was released to her in 2012, and he died later that year. The evidence here supports those milestones, not a scene-by-scene judgment about the film. It is reasonable to describe the movie as based on their true story while leaving unverified dramatic details unclaimed.
How long did Rex live with Leavey?
They spent about eight months together after the adoption. Rex died in December 2012. CBS New York reported that he saw snow for the first time after moving to New York with Leavey. The report describes their time together and Leavey’s work at the time: CBS New York’s account.

The sources establish the month of Rex’s death, not a verified exact day. It is therefore accurate to say he died in December 2012, after about eight months with Leavey; assigning a precise date would go beyond the reporting used here. The snow detail offers a small glimpse of his life after military service, but the accounts do not provide a full day-by-day description of those months.
The reunion happened, but it was brief. Leavey had spent years seeking to bring Rex home, and after his retirement she cared for him during the final months of his life. The short time they had together should not be mistaken for an immediate adoption after her own discharge: the adoption took place in 2012, long after she left the Marines in 2007.

Leavey continued working with dogs after leaving the Marines, including handling a dog named Patriot. Accounts published in 2018 described her as a veterinary technician. That is a historical description from those reports, not confirmation of her present-day occupation. The available reporting supports saying she stayed connected to dog work; it does not establish what job she holds now.
This distinction is especially important in articles about what happened “after” a film. A report published in 2018 can describe Leavey’s occupation at that time, but it should not be converted into a current-tense claim years later without a more recent source. The record summarized here says she continued handling dogs and that contemporary 2018 reports identified her as a veterinary technician. It does not provide a later employment update.
What is the real story behind the film?
The film’s true-story framing is grounded in the documented partnership between Leavey and Rex, their shared Iraq service, their 2006 injury, and the long separation before Rex’s 2012 retirement and adoption. Netflix describes the movie as based on their true story and states that it is not based on a book. That does not mean the film is a complete record of every detail, or that its chronology should replace the dates in official and contemporary accounts.

When a movie and the historical record are being compared, keep the claims narrow: Leavey left the Marines in December 2007; Rex stayed in military service; facial paralysis ended his working-dog career; and he was released to her on April 6, 2012. Rex died in December of that year. Those milestones are recorded in the Marine Corps, New York State Senate, and contemporary reporting accounts, but those accounts do not verify every dramatic scene, dialogue exchange, or supporting-character detail.
