What happened in the boat crash?
The crash happened in the early hours of February 24, 2019, at Archers Creek in Beaufort County, South Carolina. A boat carrying six young people hit bridge pilings. Mallory Beach, who was 19, was ejected, suffered a head injury and died. Her body was found about a week later, according to contemporaneous reporting by The Island Packet and the Beach estate’s later court petition.
The estate’s 2023 settlement petition alleges that Paul Murdaugh bought alcohol at Parker’s 55 on February 23 using his older brother’s identification, then drove the family boat into the pilings. Those details are allegations in the estate’s filing, not findings from a trial.
Who was driving, and what is established?
The Beach estate alleged that Paul Murdaugh, then 19, was operating the boat while intoxicated. He was directly indicted on one count of boating under the influence (BUI) causing death and two counts of BUI causing great bodily injury, as reported by The Island Packet. Those were criminal charges; the cited accounts do not establish that he was convicted at trial in the crash case.

The Island Packet’s summary of the DNR timeline places the impact at approximately 2:20 a.m. and describes conflicting passenger recollections about who was at the helm at different points. The sequence of driver changes is not settled by those accounts, so a single, certain timeline of who controlled the boat throughout the trip would overstate what they establish.
Why reports give different blood-alcohol figures
Later reports also disagree about Paul Murdaugh’s blood-alcohol level. The Associated Press reported in October 2024 that investigators said it was over 0.28%; The State reported that medical records showed 0.24%. The available reports do not reconcile the figures, so neither should be presented as an uncontested number. See the Associated Press account and The State’s report.

What happened to the family’s civil case?
Renee Beach filed a wrongful-death suit in March 2019. The case involved claims against Parker’s Corporation and others. Its eventual resolution came through settlements, not a civil trial verdict assigning fault.
The Parker’s settlement
In a verified petition filed in 2023, the estate asked the court to approve a $15 million settlement offer from insurers for Gregory M. Parker, Inc. That figure is what the petition recorded as an offer to resolve the estate’s claims; it is not a jury award or a finding of liability. The State reported that Parker’s admitted no fault. The final payment and release
In October 2024, Progressive paid its $500,000 boat liability policy limit in exchange for a full release of Alexander Murdaugh, according to the South Carolina court’s supplemental consent order and the Associated Press. The order ended the remaining case. The AP reported that the Beach family had previously received more than $15 million in settlements with Parker’s and others; that earlier total is distinct from Progressive’s later $500,000 payment.
A settlement resolves claims under agreed terms. It does not, by itself, establish that a party was legally responsible, and the Beach case did not produce a civil liability verdict.
