Lucy Gray Baird’s fate is never confirmed. In both Suzanne Collins’s novel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and its 2023 film adaptation, Coriolanus Snow fires into the woods while searching for her, but he cannot tell whether he hit her. He finds no body, and the story leaves open whether she was killed, wounded, or escaped.
What happens to Lucy Gray at the end?
After Mayfair Lipp and Billy Taupe are killed, Lucy Gray and Coriolanus Snow plan to flee north. Their escape changes course when Snow finds the guns that could implicate him in the killings. He realizes he could dispose of them and return to his former life. He also suspects Lucy Gray knows he betrayed Sejanus Plinth, which makes him see her as a threat.
At the lakeside, Lucy Gray goes to gather katniss plants. Snow finds her orange scarf and picks it up; a snake concealed beneath it bites him. He suspects she set the snake there deliberately, but the story does not establish that she did. The bite and his growing paranoia undermine his ability to judge what is happening.
Snow hears Lucy Gray singing “The Hanging Tree” and fires toward the sound. He cannot confirm that he struck her, and he eventually abandons the search. He finds no body. The scene establishes that he shoots into the woods, not that he kills Lucy Gray.
#1 Best Overall
- In this return to The Hunger Games, years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow sees a chance for a change in fortunes when he is chosen to be mentor to Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12.
Did Snow shoot Lucy Gray?
He fires at sounds he associates with Lucy Gray, but neither the novel nor the film confirms that a bullet hit her. Snow’s suspicion, the snake bite, and his inability to verify what happened leave his account uncertain. The absence of a body does not prove she survived; it simply means the story offers no confirmation of her death.
Is the ending different in the book and film?
No decisive difference resolves her fate. The 2023 film retains the novel’s central ambiguity: Lucy Gray disappears during Snow’s pursuit, and neither version confirms whether she lives or dies. Producer Nina Jacobson and director Francis Lawrence have both described the ending as intentionally open. Harper’s Bazaar’s ending explainer discusses the film’s conclusion and the reported cast and filmmaker comments.

What have Suzanne Collins and the filmmakers said?
Collins has said she was drawn to “the mystery of Lucy Gray’s fate.” That framing supports reading the uncertainty as deliberate rather than as a puzzle with a confirmed answer hidden elsewhere in the scene. Collins’s official interview discusses her interest in the mystery.
Jacobson said she was an optimist about her own ideas of what happened, while also pointing to Highbottom’s remark that mysteries can drive people mad. Her optimism is a personal interpretation, not confirmation of Lucy Gray’s survival. Lawrence likewise said the ending is best left a mystery, even though he has theories of his own. Radio Times’s interview with Jacobson and Lawrence reports their comments.

Rachel Zegler expressed a hopeful preference: “When it comes to Lucy Gray, I like to think she’s free.” That is the actor’s hope, not an answer supplied by the story. Harper’s Bazaar reports her comment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can readers conclude about Lucy Gray’s survival?
Survival is possible, but it is not established. The same is true of her death: Snow’s shots and his decision to stop searching do not confirm that she was killed. The ending gives readers enough to consider either outcome while withholding a definitive answer.
