She published a memoir in 1997, and a California State Bar inquiry into an allegation about her conduct during the retrial was closed in 1999 for insufficient evidence. Reporting around the 2024 series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story described her as retired and said she declined press outreach; it did not establish details of her private life or a direct response from her to the series.
What happened to Leslie Abramson after the trials?
Abramson became nationally known as Erik Menendez’s defense attorney during the brothers’ televised first trial. After their retrial, Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Abramson later retired from criminal defense and maintained a low public profile, according to entertainment coverage published decades afterward.

Her memoir came out in 1997
In 1997, Abramson published The Defense Is Ready: Life in the Trenches of Criminal Law. It offers a record of her professional experience, but its publication does not tell us what she has done privately in recent years.
Was Leslie Abramson disbarred?
No. A State Bar inquiry followed an allegation by an expert witness that Abramson pressured him to remove incriminating material from his notes during the Menendez retrial. In February 1999, the Los Angeles Times reported that the State Bar closed the matter, finding insufficient evidence to conclude that she had violated ethical rules. The inquiry ended without a misconduct finding; that is not the same as a finding that every disputed fact had been adjudicated.

What is known about her life now?
Public reporting supports a limited answer: Abramson is described as retired and private, and reporting around the 2024 series said she declined press outreach. TheWrap’s 2017 article quoted Law & Order: True Crime showrunner René Balcer describing her retirement as quiet. That was Balcer’s characterization, not a statement by Abramson herself.
The available reporting does not establish her current job, detailed private activities, a verified recent interview, or a direct public comment from her about Monsters. It would be speculation to say why she keeps a low profile or what she thinks of the series.

How does Monsters portray Abramson?
Ryan Murphy’s 2024 anthology installment Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story dramatizes the case and Abramson’s role; Ari Graynor plays the attorney. As TIME’s coverage of the series makes clear, it is a screen portrayal, not direct evidence of what the real Abramson later did, said, or believed. Scenes and dialogue in the drama should not be treated as her own post-trial account.
