Spoilers for the Season 24 premiere: Kate Dixon leaves the NYPD to move to Miami with her son, Patrick, after he gets a job at a school there. The show reveals this in a text Dixon sends Detective Vincent Riley. That explains the character’s exit—not Camryn Manheim’s real-world departure from Law & Order, for which the available reporting gives no confirmed reason.
Why did Kate Dixon leave Law & Order?
In the Season 24 premiere, Riley reads a text from Dixon saying Patrick has landed a job at a school in Miami and she is going with him. The episode supplies that explanation after the fact: Dixon is already gone when the new season begins, and her colleagues initially do not know where she went. TVLine’s premiere recap and TV Insider’s recap describe the reveal.
When did Camryn Manheim leave the show?
Manheim’s last season was Season 23. Her departure was reported on May 10, 2024, after three seasons on the revived series. The Season 23 finale was her final episode, but it did not explain Dixon’s absence or give the character an on-screen send-off. The Season 24 premiere, which aired October 3, 2024, later provided the Miami explanation. Us Weekly’s report on the premiere covers both the departure and the character’s eventual explanation; TV Insider’s May 2024 report and TVLine’s report announced Manheim’s departure.
Why did Camryn Manheim leave Law & Order?
The reporting establishes that Manheim departed after three seasons, but it does not establish a confirmed personal or contractual reason. Dick Wolf’s statement, quoted by Us Weekly on October 4, 2024, thanked her for “three wonderful seasons” and wished her well in her next chapter. It expresses appreciation; it does not say why she left. Dixon’s fictional move to Miami should not be treated as an explanation of Manheim’s decision.

Who replaced Kate Dixon?
Lt. Jessica Brady, played by Maura Tierney, takes over as the precinct’s lieutenant in Season 24. Brady’s arrival is established in the premiere, where the detectives initially have little information about Dixon’s whereabouts. TVLine’s recap identifies the transition. Dixon had been played by Manheim since the series returned for Season 21; Wolf Entertainment’s 2022 cast announcement introduced Manheim as Lieutenant Kate Dixon, following S. Epatha Merkerson’s Lieutenant Anita Van Buren in the role.
