His partner, Shannon St. Clair, chose to leave with him.
Why Josh left the villa
Josh and Shannon had been coupled since the first day of the season and had become boyfriend and girlfriend before they departed. When he told the remaining islanders he needed to go home, he said his sister had been the reason he joined the show and that he needed to support his family.

Capital reproduced Josh’s explanation: “She was an unbelievable person. She was the reason I’m here, the reason I found Shannon and met all you guys. It’s unexpected, but she lived an unbelievable life. I just need to be home with my family right now to support them.” The reports describe Lindsey’s death as unexpected; they do not establish a medical cause.
Shannon’s decision
Shannon said leaving with Josh was not a difficult decision. She went with him to Massachusetts, where she met his family and friends and supported him as they mourned. In an Entertainment Tonight interview published August 9, 2021, Josh reflected on returning home and said he wanted to make Lindsey proud. He also credited Shannon with supporting him through the first days of grief.

Did Josh and Shannon stay together?
Yes, for a time after filming. Capital reported that they spent Christmas together in 2021 and moved to Florida together in early 2022. Later that year, they announced a separation, saying timing was the issue and that there was no bad blood. They reconciled publicly a few months later, but separated again. In December 2023, Josh confirmed they were no longer together and said they remained friends.
What Josh did after leaving the show
Josh later returned to the franchise for Love Island Games Season 2. Capital reported the return in September 2025, and Legit.ng covered it in July 2026. In a statement reproduced by Legit.ng, Josh said he wanted to return because he had not seen the end of the villa experience and wanted to make his sister proud: “I wouldn’t be sitting here right now if it wasn’t for my sister, and I feel like I never got to see the end of the villa. So, I really want to make my sister proud and finish my journey, really finish what she started.”

His two appearances had different contexts: the first was a dating-show experience with Shannon, while his later return was framed by Josh as a chance to complete an interrupted journey.
