JonBenét Ramsey, a six-year-old known from child beauty pageants, was reported missing from her home in Boulder, Colorado, on December 26, 1996, and was later found dead inside the house. Boulder Police say the death was ruled a homicide, and the autopsy identified strangulation as the cause of death. Three decades later the case remains open, no one has been prosecuted, and the person responsible has not been publicly identified.

The official record settles the outcome. It does not settle who killed her, and it does not give a complete, timed account of what happened.

Official updates and what each one says

The public record is best read as a series of dated official updates, each with its own scope. The table lists the ones that matter for the case’s current status.

Date Source What it says
November 9, 2022 Boulder Police Department news release, “JonBenet Ramsey Homicide Update” Available DNA evidence is “extremely small and complex.” Testing could consume some or all of a sample. Further testing and genetic genealogy were under discussion with partner laboratories.
December 28, 2023 Boulder Police Department, “JonBenét Ramsey Homicide Investigation Update—December 2023” A review of the cold case file, with file-scale figures (see the table below). Police were working with DNA experts on remaining samples and preserving evidence until validated technology suited to those samples became available.
November 27, 2024 Associated Press report (secondary reporting) Reported that police denied sitting on evidence while a Netflix documentary renewed public attention to the killing.
December 2025 Boulder Police Department case page, “JonBenet Ramsey (Homicide)” Detectives conducted new and follow-up interviews, collected evidence, and tested or retested evidence to generate leads.

What the autopsy finding establishes

Boulder Police say the autopsy identified strangulation as the cause of death, and the death was ruled a homicide. That is the official medical and classification finding. It does not identify who was responsible, and it does not establish the sequence of events between the time JonBenét was reported missing and the time she was found. The official material reviewed for this article does not provide a minute-by-minute account of that day, and this article does not offer one.

The investigation’s scale, and why the figures differ

Boulder Police have published several sets of figures in different updates. They measure different things as of different dates. They are not a running total, and they should not be added together or compared line by line.

Figure Reported value Source and date What it measures
Tips, letters, and emails More than 21,016 Boulder Police case page, December 2025 update Items received
Contact with people More than 1,000 people across 19 states Boulder Police case page, December 2025 update People contacted
Tips More than 21,000 Boulder Police Department, December 2023 update Items received (earlier count)
Interviews Over 1,000 across 17 states and two foreign countries Boulder Police Department, December 2023 update Interviews conducted
Samples From more than 200 individuals Boulder Police Department, December 2023 update Samples collected from individuals
Evidence Nearly 2,500 pieces Boulder Police Department, December 2023 update Physical evidence items
Reports Roughly 40,000 Boulder Police Department, December 2023 update Reports in the case file
Pages More than one million Boulder Police Department, December 2023 update Pages in the case file

A tip count measures what arrived, not what was verified as a lead. The 2025 “contact” figure and the 2023 “interview” figure are different measures, so they should not be merged into one number.

DNA and forensic testing

DNA is the area where official language has been most consistent about limits, and it is also the area most often misread.

The November 2022 position

In its November 9, 2022 release, Boulder Police described the available DNA evidence as “extremely small and complex” and warned that testing could consume some or all of a sample. The department said it was discussing further testing and genetic genealogy with partner laboratories. It said it would proceed once a proven technology could reliably test evidence consistent with the available samples.

The December 2023 position

The December 2023 update said police were working with DNA experts on the remaining samples and preserving evidence for testing once validated technology suitable for those samples became available. Both updates tie the pace of DNA work to the material itself: the remaining samples are limited and complex, and the methods used must be validated for them.

What the DNA record does not show

  • Neither official update announces a DNA identification of a perpetrator.
  • Neither update reports that genetic genealogy has produced an identification in this case.
  • A statement that testing is being discussed or that evidence is being preserved is not a test result.

Investigated people, public theories, and what counts as a finding

Police say they have investigated multiple people and remain open-minded. They have not publicly identified a perpetrator, and no one has been prosecuted. Public names and theories have circulated for years, through books, television, documentaries, and online discussion. They sort into different categories, which matter when you weigh a claim.

Category Example Status
Official finding The autopsy identified strangulation; the death was ruled a homicide Stated by Boulder Police as the official cause and classification
Investigative activity New and follow-up interviews, evidence collection, and retesting, described in the December 2025 update Ongoing. Not a charge and not a finding of responsibility
Investigated persons Police say they have investigated multiple people Not publicly identified. No one has been charged
Public theories and programs Documentaries, books, media coverage, and a grand-jury-related claim reported elsewhere Not official findings. Not evidence of guilt

A name in a program or book is a claim someone is making. It is not a conclusion the police have reached.

Where the case stands

In its December 2025 update on the case page, Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said:

“This case remains a top priority for our department.”

On the same case page, Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said:

“Whether it is DNA or other evidence, more is needed to solve this murder.”

The department says it cannot comment on specific aspects of the open investigation. Gaps in the public account are therefore not filled by official explanation, and a claim that fills one should be treated with caution.

Documentaries and the parents’ account

The Associated Press report of November 27, 2024 tied renewed public attention to the case to a Netflix documentary. The same report identifies The Death of Innocence by John and Patsy Ramsey as the parents’ book.

Read the book as the parents’ own account, with the perspective it carries. It is not an official case record and does not settle who was responsible. Before buying, check the current edition and retailer listing.

How to check for newer official information

  1. Search the City of Boulder website for “JonBenet Ramsey (Homicide),” the Boulder Police Department case page. The page spells the name “JonBenet.”
  2. Note the date of the most recent update. The latest dated update covered here is December 2025. The page may have posted newer material since.
  3. Before accepting a claim, check whether it is attributed to a dated police release or a named official. A claim attributed to neither should be treated as unverified.
