What is known about the day Hoffa disappeared?
Hoffa, the former president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, was expected to meet Anthony “Tony Jack” Giacalone and Anthony “Tony Pro” Provenzano at the Machus Red Fox, a restaurant in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Township. The Associated Press described Giacalone as a reputed Detroit mob enforcer and Provenzano as an alleged New Jersey mob figure; those descriptions are attributions, not findings about what happened that day. AP’s 2025 account recounts that Hoffa called his wife, Josephine, from a pay phone at about 2:15 p.m. and said the expected people had not appeared. He was never seen or heard from again.
The Indiana Historical Bureau gives a separate witness detail: people last saw Hoffa in front of the restaurant at about 1:30 p.m. It also says his car was found abandoned at a Bloomfield Hills shopping center near the restaurant. These reported details do not amount to a complete minute-by-minute account, so they cannot establish precisely when or how he left the area. The Indiana Historical Bureau’s account provides that context.
What is the FBI’s current public position?
On July 31, 2025, the FBI Detroit Field Office said the investigation remained active and that it was pursuing credible leads. Special Agent in Charge Cheyvoryea Gibson said: “As the 50th anniversary of Mr. Hoffa’s disappearance approaches, the FBI Detroit Field Office remains steadfast in its commitment to pursuing all credible leads.” The FBI’s anniversary statement is the latest official status cited here.

The Associated Press reported in 2025 that no one had been directly charged in Hoffa’s disappearance or death. An active investigation means the FBI says it continues to pursue leads; it does not announce that investigators have proved a particular account.
What do the Hoffex memo and other theories say?
Organized crime is central to many explanations of Hoffa’s disappearance, but context is not proof of the specific people, method, or location involved. A PBS transcript describes the Hoffex memo, an FBI document written months after Hoffa vanished, and recounts an investigative theory that only a limited number of people knew what had happened. The transcript also discusses Frank Sheeran’s later account of Hoffa’s killing, while raising the question of whether Sheeran’s story is true. The PBS transcript presents these as investigative theory and a later claim, not as a judicial finding or verified physical evidence.
Those accounts should not be treated as competing proven solutions. A memo records an investigative assessment; a later personal account is a claim. Neither, on the evidence cited here, establishes who killed Hoffa or where his remains are. The FBI’s released-records collection includes multiple parts; the Part 10 landing page identifies a PDF covering pages 1661–2036, but the landing page does not summarize what those pages establish.
