Gainax announced in June 2024 that its bankruptcy petition had been accepted, about 40 years after the company was established. That was not the end of the legal process: Studio Khara reported in December 2025 that the proceedings had concluded and Gainax had ceased to exist as a legal entity. Evangelion did not disappear with the company; Gainax said its copyright was held by Khara.
What happened to Gainax?
Gainax said it filed for bankruptcy with the Tokyo District Court on May 29, 2024, and that the petition was accepted. The company announced this on June 7, 2024. Gainax had been established in 1984 and worked in animation and game production and sales, according to its notice. The announcement came about 40 years after its founding, but the bankruptcy proceedings continued beyond that filing.
On December 10, 2025, Studio Khara reported that the proceedings had concluded and that Gainax had ceased to exist as a legal entity, as published in the Official Gazette. The 2024 announcement therefore marked the accepted bankruptcy petition, not the completion of the process.
Why did Gainax go bankrupt?
In its June 2024 notice, Gainax attributed its financial decline from around 2012 to a series of business decisions and obligations. It cited overly optimistic restaurant management, an unplanned CG company, large unsecured loans to executives, failed investment projects, and the debt and unpaid obligations that followed.

Those are Gainax’s own explanations; the statements cited here do not provide an independent audit of its finances. They also do not give a debt total or a creditor count.
Does Khara own Evangelion?
Gainax’s June 2024 notice said Khara held Evangelion’s copyright. It separately said the GAINAX trademark had been transferred to and was managed by Khara. The trademark and Evangelion copyright are distinct rights; the bankruptcy announcement did not mean Evangelion itself vanished.

Khara said that after Gainax’s former president was arrested in 2019, it worked with KADOKAWA, King Records, and Studio Trigger to protect Evangelion and related works, address debts owed to creators, and prevent intellectual property and production materials from being lost. In its December 2025 statement, Khara said rights and production materials had been returned to their rightful holders through proper procedures. The available statements do not establish a complete, work-by-work account of who holds rights to every Gainax-associated title.

Gainax Co., Ltd. ceased to exist as a legal entity when its bankruptcy process concluded in 2025. That does not mean every similarly named company was dissolved. Gainax’s 2024 notice distinguished the bankrupt company from Gaina (Studio Gaina), Fukushima Gaina, Gainax International, GAINAX Kyoto, Yonago Gainax, Gainax Niigata, and GAINAX WEST. The notice does not say those separate entities were dissolved or that their rights transferred as a result of Gainax’s bankruptcy.
