He appeared in the 2024 documentary BRATS, which revisits the Brat Pack label, and later chose not to appear on camera in Netflix’s 2025 documentary aka Charlie Sheen. The most disputed chapter is his departure from The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers: reports connected it to the show’s COVID-19 vaccination policy, while Estevez said it stemmed from creative differences and a contract dispute.
Why did Emilio Estevez leave The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers?
Estevez returned as Gordon Bombay for the first season of Disney+’s The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, but did not return for season two. Contemporary reports linked his departure to a disagreement over the production’s COVID-19 vaccination policy. Estevez disputed that account in a statement reported by TheWrap and TVLine on November 8, 2021.
He said he had contracted COVID-19 in March 2020 and experienced what he called “Long Haul Syndrome” later that year. He also said he returned to production in August 2020 while still concerned about safety. Those are Estevez’s descriptions of his health and circumstances, not independently verified clinical findings.
On the employment dispute, Estevez called it a “good old fashioned contract dispute” and said, “I am not anti-vaxx. Full stop.” He added: “My exit from the show was due to a myriad of creative differences — any other narrative is false.” That is his stated explanation; the available accounts do not establish a definitive, independently adjudicated explanation of the private negotiations. TheWrap’s report of his statement and TVLine’s coverage describe the competing accounts.

BRATS revisits the Brat Pack
Estevez was among the performers appearing in Andrew McCarthy’s 2024 documentary BRATS, a retrospective on the Brat Pack label and its effects. Disney’s catalog describes the film as a 1-hour-33-minute documentary and lists Estevez among its participants. Disney’s catalog listing provides the film details; availability varies by region.
The film looks back at how the label shaped the actors’ public image. In a 2024 interview with TheWrap, McCarthy recalled Estevez describing the group as “kryptonite to each other in a certain way.” McCarthy also said that, in his view, the label coincided with fewer ensemble films being made. That is McCarthy’s reflection on the period, not proof that the label alone determined Estevez’s later career. Read TheWrap’s interview with McCarthy.

He did not appear on camera in aka Charlie Sheen
Estevez and his father, Martin Sheen, declined on-camera participation in Netflix’s 2025 documentary aka Charlie Sheen. Director Andrew Renzi told Netflix Tudum, “They wanted to let Charlie have this moment.” Renzi said he had watched the film with them and that they were supportive of it. This explanation comes from Renzi as reported by Netflix, rather than a direct statement from Estevez. Netflix Tudum’s report gives Renzi’s account.
