John Carpenter’s later life received a limited update; reporting on Kevin Olmstead focuses on his quiz background and the mechanics of his record jackpot. David Goodman and Ed Toutant are best known in the available accounts for how they won—not for a documented account of their lives afterward.
This is a look at the U.S. edition. The UK program has a separate history and prize currency.
What happened to the early U.S. winners?
The amounts and stories behind these wins are well documented. Their later lives are not equally so. The table separates what the sources establish about each game from what they say about the contestants afterward.
| Contestant | Win | How the win happened | What later reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| John Carpenter | $1 million in 1999 | First U.S. contestant to win the top prize; he used his final Phone-a-Friend call to tell his father he was about to win. | A 2024 retrospective, drawing on an earlier interview, described his life in Connecticut as comparatively ordinary and said he felt the prize made it more comfortable. It is not a current financial biography. TV Insider |
| David Goodman | $1 million in July 2000 | He was part of the University of Michigan quiz bowl circle; Kevin Olmstead had coached him and Goodman called to wish Olmstead luck before Olmstead’s million-dollar question. | The available accounts describe his win and connection to Olmstead, but do not establish what he did with the money or offer a reliable later-life update. ABC News |
| Ed Toutant | $1,860,000 on his return | After an earlier question was found to contain an error, he was invited back and won the progressive jackpot. | The retrospective account documents the comeback, but does not establish a detailed account of his life afterward. TV Insider |
| Kevin Olmstead | $2,180,000 in April 2001 | The jackpot had grown under the show’s progressive prize structure. ABC reported that $1,180,000 in accumulated bonus money was added to the base prize. | Contemporaneous coverage focused on his extensive quiz experience and work. A 2021 interview revisited the competition, but neither source provides a full account of his later life or finances. ABC News; The A.V. Club |
John Carpenter: the first U.S. million-dollar winner
Carpenter won $1 million in 1999, becoming the first contestant on the U.S. edition to reach the top prize. His final Phone-a-Friend call became part of the show’s lore: rather than ask his father for help, he told him, “I don’t really need your help. I just wanted to let you know that I’m going to win the million dollars.” TV Insider

In the interview described by TV Insider’s 2024 retrospective, Carpenter said the prize made life more comfortable. At that interview’s time, he was living a normal life in Connecticut and attending local brewery trivia nights. That is a snapshot from an earlier interview, not confirmation of his circumstances in 2026, and it does not establish his net worth or how he managed the winnings.
Kevin Olmstead: why the jackpot exceeded $1 million
Olmstead won $2,180,000 on the ABC U.S. edition in April 2001. The amount was larger than the usual top prize because the show’s progressive jackpot had accumulated a $1,180,000 bonus pool above the base amount. ABC reported it was the largest individual American game-show prize at the time. ABC News

His win was not an isolated encounter with trivia. In its contemporaneous report, ABC described Olmstead as an engineer, a former Jeopardy! winner, co-founder of National Academic Quiz Tournaments, and University of Michigan quiz bowl adviser. He had coached David Goodman, who won $1 million in 2000. ABC News
In a 2021 interview, Olmstead recalled entering for a straightforward reason: “The money.” He also discussed the show’s dial-in screening process and reaching several playoffs. Those recollections illuminate how he got onto the program; they are not a later-life profile. The A.V. Club

David Goodman: a win linked to Michigan quiz bowl
Goodman won $1 million in July 2000. ABC’s 2001 account called him the show’s previous and youngest winner at the time of Olmstead’s appearance, and connected the two through the University of Michigan quiz bowl group: Olmstead had coached Goodman, who called to wish him luck before the million-dollar question. ABC News
The available reporting does not establish what Goodman did with his prize, what career he pursued afterward, or where he is now. A large televised win alone cannot answer those questions.

Ed Toutant: the comeback after a faulty question
Toutant’s story turned on a disputed question. According to TV Insider’s retrospective, he first played when the progressive jackpot stood at $1,860,000, then missed a $16,000 question. The show later determined that the question contained an error and invited him back. On his return, he won the jackpot. TV Insider
That account supports the comeback and the prize amount, but not a broader biography. It does not establish how Toutant used the winnings or provide a detailed update on his life after the show.

Keep the U.S. and UK winner lists separate
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? is an international format, but each country’s edition has its own contestants, prize currency and history. Roman Dubowski, discussed in an ITV Press Centre interview in 2026, is a UK contestant—not part of the U.S. winners described here. ITV Press Centre
What the prize amounts do—and do not—tell us
The reported winnings are not evidence of take-home pay, lasting wealth, or financial outcomes. The accounts cited here do not provide a named study or comparable long-term financial reporting on these contestants. Beyond Carpenter’s limited interview-based update, the sources document game histories more fully than life after the show.
