Dove Cameron and Thomas Doherty ended their relationship in October 2020, and Cameron announced the split publicly on December 11, 2020. She called the decision difficult, said they still loved each other, and said they would remain friends. Neither she nor the coverage from that period gives a specific reason for the breakup. In a 2021 interview, Cameron said she would not be explaining the private reasons.

What Cameron said publicly
The December 2020 announcement
Cameron’s announcement, as quoted in Teen Vogue and UPI reporting from the time, reads: “The decision was incredibly difficult, but we still have love for each other, and will remain friends.” The statement is brief and does not describe what led to the decision. Both outlets report the same wording, but the full statement is not reproduced in a source that could be checked directly, so quote it as reported.
The June 2021 Entertainment Tonight interview
This is the most detailed account Cameron gave of how the breakup affected her. She called the situation amicable at that point and said it had been very hard. Two lines from the interview are the ones most often quoted:

- “I personally believe we have many soulmates in this life, but I don’t think that somebody stops being a soulmate when you break up.”
- “I think that you have to love people with every inch of you and you can’t regret it when it ends.”
She also said she did not expect to explain “what happened” in detail, keeping the reasons between the two of them.
“LazyBaby” and how she described it
Cameron described “LazyBaby” as a song about the period after a breakup, moving from grief toward something lighter. She said she sent the song to Doherty before it was released and that he listened to it. She presented the song as part of her own process, not as an explanation of the split. Reading specific lyrics as evidence of a cause goes beyond what she said.
What remains private
Cameron has not described the reasons for the breakup in any of the coverage reviewed. In October 2021 she said she now valued privacy more and that it felt better to keep some things to herself. Her public remarks are therefore selective. They tell you how she has framed the breakup, not everything that happened between them.
Doherty’s side is not documented in the same reporting. Nothing in the coverage from these dates attributes a statement about the cause to him.

Where they met
Cameron and Doherty met while making Descendants 2. That is useful background on how their relationship started, but the reporting does not connect the film to the end of the relationship, and it should not be read as a factor in the split.

- Treat October 2020 as the decision point and December 11, 2020 as the public announcement. Articles that give a different date for either should be checked against the original reporting.
- Treat anything about a specific cause, including a rumored affair, a career conflict, or a lyric interpretation, as unconfirmed unless Cameron or Doherty has said it on the record.
- Note that the Teen Vogue and UPI announcement wording is quoted in reporting from December 2020. It is not a fresh statement from either person.
Coverage from after October 2021 was not part of this review. If either of them has spoken about the breakup since then, that statement would change the picture, so check for newer interviews before repeating any account of the reasons.
