Lucy Liu says she confronted Bill Murray during a rehearsal for Charlie’s Angels after realizing his insults were directed at her. She has said she does not regret standing up for herself. Drew Barrymore later recalled that the cast supported Liu and dealt with the incident at the time.
What happened during the rehearsal?
In a July 2021 interview with the Los Angeles Times for its Asian Enough podcast, Liu recounted that the cast had reworked an agency scene over a weekend when Murray was unavailable. When they rehearsed the revised scene, she said, Murray began hurling insults.
Liu said she was initially unsure whether he was speaking to her. She asked, “Are you talking to me?” and then realized the exchange had become one-on-one. She described some of the language as “inexcusable and unacceptable” and said she would not simply sit and take it. Liu did not provide the specific insults, so their wording should not be assumed.
Does Lucy Liu regret confronting Bill Murray?
No. Liu said, “I stood up for myself, and I don’t regret it.” She said she saw no justification for condescending to or putting someone down, whatever that person’s status or background. She connected her resolve in part to a childhood memory of seeing her mother treated condescendingly in a store, saying she wanted to defend her own dignity and self-respect.

What did Liu and the cast say afterward?
Liu’s later relationship with Murray
Liu also said she had nothing against Murray. She recalled seeing him at an Saturday Night Live reunion, where he approached her and was “perfectly nice.” That cordial encounter, she said, did not change her view that she should not have to accept being attacked.
In a January 2025 Guardian profile, Liu reflected more broadly on protecting herself when something felt wrong: “I think when I sense something is not right, I am going to protect myself.” This was a later reflection on her response to perceived injustice, not a new account of the rehearsal’s details.

Barrymore’s recollection
Drew Barrymore, who also starred in the film, offered a separate account in an interview reported by E! News in October 2021. Barrymore said Murray was initially in a bad mood and made remarks generally before focusing on Liu. She said the cast backed Liu and addressed the situation at the time: “We all supported her and backed her up and we moved forward.” That is Barrymore’s characterization of events.
Murray’s reported response
A 2021 CNA Lifestyle report, updated in 2025, repeated a comment Murray reportedly made in a 2009 Times of London interview: “Look, I will dismiss you completely if you are unprofessional and work with me.” This is a republication of his reported earlier comment, not a new statement made in response to Liu’s 2021 account.

What is—and is not—established about the clash?
The central account of the rehearsal comes from Liu’s first-person recollection, published by the Los Angeles Times in July 2021. Barrymore separately recalled the cast’s support for Liu. The sources cited here do not independently establish every detail of the exchange, and they do not establish that the dispute caused Murray’s absence from the 2003 sequel. The accounts describe verbal insults and a confrontation; they do not establish physical violence.
