Kelly Rowland said she “stood my ground” after a tense exchange with a security worker at the Cannes Film Festival premiere of Marcello Mio on May 21, 2024. Two days later, she said she felt other women who did not look like her had not been scolded or moved along in the same way. That was Rowland’s account; the available footage and reporting do not establish the worker’s motive or show the full interaction that came before the exchange.
What happened on the Cannes red carpet?
Rowland attended the premiere of Marcello Mio on May 21, 2024. Reports describe her posing for photographs before a security worker guided or moved her up the stairs toward the screening. Video showed a tense exchange between them, but it did not capture enough context to establish what preceded it or why the worker acted as she did. The Guardian’s account and ABC Australia’s report described the incident and circulating footage without establishing the guard’s intent.
What did Kelly Rowland say about the incident?
At the amfAR gala in Cannes on May 23, the Associated Press asked Rowland about the exchange. She said: “I stood my ground, and she felt like she had to stand hers, but I stood my ground.” AP Archive footage records her remarks in Cannes that day; AP also reported her account on May 24.
Rowland said she believed other women who did not look like her had not been scolded or pushed along in the same way. This describes how she interpreted her treatment. The footage and published accounts do not independently verify the worker’s motive or establish that other attendees were treated differently in comparable circumstances.

What is known—and what remains unclear?
- Established by the reporting: The exchange occurred at the May 21 premiere of Marcello Mio, and Rowland discussed it at the amfAR gala two days later.
- Rowland’s account: She felt she was treated differently from women who did not look like her and said she stood her ground.
- Not established by the available footage and reports: The complete interaction before the filmed exchange, the security worker’s perspective, or the worker’s reason for intervening.
The Guardian reported on May 24 that festival organisers had not commented by the time of its report. That is a dated observation; it does not establish whether they responded later.
