The clearest account of how the dispute escalated comes from Eminem: he said Limp Bizkit backed away from joining his response to Everlast, and that DJ Lethal’s later comments pushed him to diss the band. Louder identifies Eminem’s “Girls,” released on D12’s 2001 debut Devil’s Night, as that diss. Louder’s retrospective reports Eminem’s account; it is not an independent ruling on who was responsible.
What is the “heartbreaking truth” about Fred Durst and Eminem?
That characterization is not verified by the accessible record. A 2025 video listing describes a clip as an excerpt from a 2018 Rock Feed interview and says Durst discusses his history with Eminem, but the listing does not include a full transcript. It therefore cannot establish what Durst said in context or support attributing a particular emotional revelation to him. The video listing is not a substitute for the complete interview.

What can be described is a documented collaboration that soured, followed by Eminem’s account of a dispute involving Everlast, a missed session and comments by DJ Lethal. The sequence should be attributed to Eminem rather than presented as an uncontested explanation.
How did Eminem and Limp Bizkit’s relationship change?
They were discussing collaboration in April 2000
On April 28, 2000, Eminem told Music 365 that he was not angry a track he had recorded with Limp Bizkit was left off the band’s Significant Other. “I wasn’t pissed. It just didn’t come out the way we wanted. I plan on having them on my next album,” he said. That contemporary comment indicates that he still anticipated working with the band at the time. The interview was republished by Eminem.net.

NME also reported that day that Fred Durst defended “The Real Slim Shady,” despite its line about Durst and Carson Daly. That report is evidence of a public association at the time, not proof that the later dispute had already begun. NME’s report is the available account.
Eminem linked the fallout to his dispute with Everlast
In the account quoted by Louder, Eminem said Limp Bizkit offered to take part in his response to Everlast. At the planned session, he recalled, Durst said he had a toothache and could not make it, while DJ Lethal was unsure about doing the song because he was still friendly with Everlast. Eminem said Lethal’s later remarks on MTV were what pushed him toward dissing the band. The quoted recollection is Eminem’s version of events, not a statement from Durst or Lethal.

Louder identifies “Girls” as Eminem’s recorded response, released on D12’s 2001 debut album, Devil’s Night. Read Louder’s retrospective for its account of the session, MTV comments and track.
Was it a clean break between the artists?
No simple break is established by the timeline. A retrospective says Limp Bizkit toured with Eminem on the Anger Management Tour in late 2000, overlapping with the period of the reported dispute. That association does not disprove conflict; it cautions against describing the relationship as an immediate, complete split. The retrospective’s tour account supplies that context.
What did Fred Durst later say about Eminem?
In a Reddit AMA on July 21, 2013, Durst was asked whether “Douchebag” was aimed at Eminem. He answered: “I have never written a song about Eminem.” The statement addresses his own songwriting; it does not say that no conflict existed, nor does it settle the events Eminem described. The AMA transcript reproduces the exchange.
