At the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, Chappell Roan turned toward the photographers after an off-screen voice was heard saying “shut the f*** up” and replied, “You shut the f*** up.” The footage captured the exchange, but reporting did not establish whom the first remark was aimed at. Roan later said the crowded carpet felt overwhelming and scary, and that she yelled back because people do not get to yell at her like that.
What happened on the 2024 VMAs black carpet?
The exchange took place on September 11, 2024, as Roan posed outside UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. In the footage described by the Los Angeles Times and TMZ, an off-screen person in the crowd or photographer area says “shut the f*** up.” Roan turns toward the photographers and answers, “You shut the f*** up,” then adds, “No, not me, b—.”
Was the photographer telling Chappell Roan to shut up?
That is not established. The Los Angeles Times reported that the reason for the remark was unclear; the speaker is off-screen, and the available account does not confirm who was being addressed. The exchange shows Roan responding to the voice, but it does not prove the voice was directed at her. Describing the moment as a photographer telling Roan to shut up goes beyond what the reporting establishes.
How did Roan explain her response?
In an Entertainment Tonight interview on the carpet after the exchange, Roan described the experience as “quite overwhelming and quite scary.” As reported by the Los Angeles Times and Us Weekly, she said she gets a lot of anxiety when people yell at her, that “the carpet is horrifying,” and that she yelled back: “You don’t get to yell at me like that.” Those remarks explain her account of how the moment felt; they do not identify the original speaker’s intended target.

Why did the exchange draw attention?
Roan had spoken publicly about boundaries with fans and unwanted demands for access. That context helps explain why a loud, crowded event carpet could feel difficult for her, but it cannot establish what the off-screen person meant. At the ceremony, Roan was nominated in four categories, performed “Good Luck, Babe!” and won Best New Artist, as the Los Angeles Times reported.
