Blake Jenner and Melissa Benoist’s relationship became a public controversy after Benoist described intimate partner violence in 2019 and Jenner responded in 2020. Those disclosures document a painful chapter in their past; the cited reporting does not establish that Jenner’s life has since taken a “dark turn” or verify his current personal or career circumstances.
What happened between Melissa Benoist and Blake Jenner?
Benoist and Jenner met while working on Glee, married in 2015, and divorced in 2017, according to TheWrap’s November 2019 report. Benoist filed for divorce in December 2016; it was finalized in December 2017.
In a video posted in November 2019, Benoist said she had experienced intimate partner violence in a past relationship. She did not name the person in the video, as contemporaneous coverage noted. TheWrap reported that she described escalating abuse and an incident in which a phone struck her face, causing serious eye and facial injuries. Those details are Benoist’s account, as reported by TheWrap.
What did Benoist say in 2019?
Benoist identified herself as a survivor in her video: “I am a survivor of domestic violence, or IPV, intimate partner violence, which is something I never in my life expected I would say, let alone be broadcasting into the ether.” The quotation was reported by TheWrap on November 27, 2019.

Her video described a past relationship without naming her former partner. News coverage connected the account to Jenner through their relationship history and the circumstances she described; that identification should not be confused with Benoist naming him in the video.

In October 2020, Jenner published a statement addressing his past relationship with Benoist. The Los Angeles Times reported on October 9, 2020, that Jenner accepted responsibility for harm he said he caused, including emotional, mental, and physical harm, and apologized to his former partner.

“I take full responsibility and accountability for the hurt that I inflicted during my relationship with my past partner — emotionally, mentally and yes, physically,” Jenner said in the statement, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times. He also wrote: “The most important apology extends — then and now — to my former partner. I am sorry.”
Jenner described throwing his phone during an argument and hitting his former partner. The Los Angeles Times reported that his account aligned with the phone injury Benoist had described; that report does not amount to an independent adjudication of every detail.

What did Jenner allege about Benoist?
In the same statement, Jenner alleged that Benoist had abused him. These are Jenner’s allegations, not findings independently established by the cited reporting. Benoist’s account and Jenner’s response should be attributed to their respective speakers rather than presented as a court’s determination.
The Los Angeles Times and TheWrap accounts document public statements and reporting about them, not a court finding on the abuse allegations. Jenner’s counter-allegations do not, by themselves, disprove Benoist’s account.

Does the reporting show that Jenner’s life took a “dark turn”?
No. The cited coverage from 2019 and 2020 documents the former couple’s disclosures and the controversy surrounding them. It does not verify a present-day crisis, describe Jenner’s current personal circumstances, or establish his current career standing. The phrase “dark turn” is therefore a framing of the headline, not a supported account of his present life.
For the response itself, see TheWrap’s October 8, 2020 coverage of Jenner’s statement.
