The comments often cited as evidence of a feud were a public disagreement in 2018 about Sherlock fandom: Freeman discussed pressure and some fans’ treatment of actors, while Cumberbatch argued that storytellers should manage audience expectations rather than blame fans. Freeman later said a headline had overstated his point and stressed his affection for people on the show.
What sparked the falling-out rumors?
The speculation centers on interviews about Sherlock and its fans, not a reported private incident between the actors. In 2018, Freeman spoke about the intensity of fan expectations and how some fans treated actors. His remarks were presented under the headline “Being in Sherlock isn’t always fun.”
Cumberbatch was asked about fan expectations in a separate interview. He said, “It’s the responsibilities of the storytellers to manage that, really,” and added, “I think it’s pretty weak to blame it on the fans, y’know. You’re either along for the ride or not.” The comments expressed a different view of responsibility for managing fandom; the coverage does not establish that Cumberbatch was making a personal attack on Freeman. BBC America’s coverage of Cumberbatch’s interview provides that context.
What did Freeman say he meant?
Freeman later objected to the headline’s implication. “I didn’t say that Sherlock isn’t fun for me any more,” he said, explaining that he had been discussing aspects of fan expectations. He added, “There’s a lot of people I love on that show and that show has been extremely good to all of us.” The Guardian also reported that Freeman had not been aware of Cumberbatch’s response and resented the way the press headline portrayed his remarks. The Guardian interview, published 10 May 2018, includes his clarification.

How did they describe working together?
Freeman’s public comments about Cumberbatch have also included praise. At BAFTA’s A Life in Pictures event, he recalled their chemistry read and described their professional connection as good fortune: “Neither me nor Ben can take credit for that it’s just luck, it’s good fortune, you know.” He also said, “Ben is very, very good at his job; he’s brilliantly cast in that role.” BAFTA’s event transcript records those remarks.
Does the future of Sherlock suggest they are estranged?
No. Discussion of a possible revival is a separate issue from the actors’ private relationship. In 2024, co-creator Steven Moffat said that bringing the show back would require securing its two lead actors: “I’m easy to get, but you need to get the two big stars. That’s the problem.” In 2025, co-creator Mark Gatiss questioned the point of making more episodes. Neither statement establishes that Cumberbatch or Freeman declined to return because of hostility toward the other. The Independent’s 2024 report on Moffat and its 2025 report on Gatiss address the revival question.

Are Cumberbatch and Freeman still friends?
The available public accounts do not establish whether they are currently close friends, estranged, or in regular contact. They support a narrower conclusion: the widely cited 2018 exchange concerned fan expectations and how to discuss them, and Freeman rejected the broader implication that he disliked working on Sherlock. The public record described here does not verify a private rupture between the two actors.
