The available public record does not establish a personal feud between Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay. Bourdain wrote about Ramsay in sharp, sometimes cutting terms, but also praised his cooking and leadership. Years later, Ramsay called Bourdain “a great friend” and recalled sharing meals and wine. The clearest public tension involved comparisons between Ramsay’s travel-food series Uncharted and Bourdain’s Parts Unknown—not a documented falling-out between the men.
What Bourdain wrote about Ramsay in 2001
In an excerpt from A Cook’s Tour published by The Guardian, Bourdain gave Ramsay a mixed portrait. He called him a “hustler, media-manipulator, artist, craftsman, bully, and glory hound”—then concluded, “in short, a chef’s chef.” The criticism was pointed, but it was not unqualified condemnation.
Bourdain also praised Ramsay’s work in the kitchen and the food he served at his Chelsea restaurant. He wrote that 45 members of staff followed Ramsay when he left Aubergine, and singled out the restaurant’s braised beef and foie gras as “absolutely stunning.” The staff figure is Bourdain’s account in the book excerpt, not an independently audited employment record.
Did Bourdain dislike Ramsay?
The writing supports a more complicated answer than a simple yes or no. Bourdain criticized Ramsay’s public persona and described behavior he regarded as bullying, while also admiring his ability, work ethic, control of the kitchen, staff loyalty, and cooking. The excerpt does not prove what Bourdain privately felt about Ramsay overall.

What was the 2011 discussion about Ramsay’s temper?
A 2011 Boston Magazine interview with Eric Ripert discusses Ripert’s tweet “anger=weakness” after an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. Ripert said that Bourdain’s judgmental or opinionated manner was often sarcasm rather than anger. The interview offers context about how the chefs’ public styles were discussed, but it does not report a confrontation between Bourdain and Ramsay or establish a feud.
Why were Uncharted and Parts Unknown compared?
In a 2019 interview with Global News, Ramsay was asked whether Uncharted copied Bourdain’s travel-food series Parts Unknown. Ramsay rejected the comparison, saying, “It’s completely different.” He described Uncharted as distinct from Bourdain’s show.
That exchange was a public disagreement about television format and originality. It is the clearest later source of friction in the available record, but it does not show that the two men had fallen out. Ramsay also said in the interview: “First of all, Tony [Bourdain] was a great friend of mine, and we shared many a time across the table with a glass of wine, and such a tragic loss.”

Ramsay publicly described Bourdain as a friend in 2019 and recalled sharing meals and wine with him. That is Ramsay’s retrospective account; the available sources do not establish how often they met, how their friendship began, or what they discussed in private. Nor do they document a final confrontation, a sustained personal feud, or a reconciliation.

What the public record supports
- Bourdain’s 2001 account was sharply worded but also admiring of Ramsay’s cooking and abilities.
- Ramsay later described Bourdain as a great friend.
- The dispute over whether Uncharted resembled Parts Unknown concerned the shows, not demonstrably the men’s private relationship.
- The 2011 discussion of Ramsay’s temper does not establish a direct dispute with Bourdain.
