On his podcast in October, he called the performance “wasn’t great” and “choppy,” gave personal context for how he felt that night, and said his team would review the edit. At that point, they had not decided whether to record again.
What happened at the Beacon Theatre?
Von taped comedy shows at New York’s Beacon Theatre on September 27, 2025, for a prospective Netflix special, according to MovieMaker and Rolling Stone. Reporting and audience accounts described a difficult night, but they do not establish that every attendee experienced the show the same way.

The taping drew criticism
Writing from the theatre the next day, Vanity Fair’s Dan Adler described false starts and a restart during the taping. Online attendee accounts also claimed there were further interruptions and walkouts. Those accounts are not a verified count of how many people left, or proof that the entire audience reacted alike.
What did Theo Von say about the criticism?
In episode 614 of his podcast, This Past Weekend, titled “New York Circus,” Von acknowledged that the show had gone poorly. Rolling Stone reported that he described it as “messier” than earlier performances, “wasn’t great,” and “choppy.” He also said some people in the audience liked it. “Look, it wasn’t great. I didn’t love it,” he said, according to the outlet, adding, “I’ll eat failure for breakfast.”

Von said his team would review the recording’s edit and had not decided whether to shoot again. MovieMaker reported that he described last-minute changes and confusion around the two performances, said he felt off, and singled out the second half of the first show as material he felt good about. Those are Von’s reflections on the taping, not an independent evaluation of the full set.
What context did Von give for the rough performance?
Von attributed how he felt to several personal and news-related pressures. He said he had begun “self-wean[ing]” from antidepressants because he wanted more emotion in the show. He also cited stress after Charlie Kirk’s murder, the Department of Homeland Security’s use of an older clip of him in a deportation-related post, a call offering additional security, and the pressure of taping. These were Von’s explanations; the reports do not establish them as clinical causes of the performance.

MovieMaker reported that Von objected to the DHS post and asked the agency to remove the clip, saying his views on immigration were more nuanced than the video conveyed. He wrote: “Yooo DHS i didnt approve to be used in this. I know you know my address so send a check.” He also wrote, “When it comes to immigration my thoughts and heart are alot more nuanced than this video allows.”

A clip circulated in which Von told an audience member, “I’m having a long month, I’m trying not to take my own life.” On the podcast, he said he did not mean the remark literally and clarified: “I would never take my own life.” The reports provide that clarification; they do not support diagnosing him or drawing conclusions about his mental health.
