The reaction spread through viral clips, but it was not universal: some screenings were quiet, and the available reporting does not establish how often theaters experienced disruptions.
Why the “chicken jockey” scene prompted a reaction
The moment drew on a familiar Minecraft image: a baby zombie riding a chicken. In the film, Jack Black’s character calls out “Chicken jockey!” Some audience members treated the line as a cue to cheer or shout, and clips of the reactions circulated on TikTok. Reporting also described viewers standing and throwing concessions.
The Guardian’s April 9, 2025 report documented the trend in the UK and US. The incidents were real, but viral footage is not a measure of how many screenings were affected. The Guardian also reported quiet early-afternoon screenings in Manchester; no systematic figure established the share of screenings where audiences disrupted the film. The Guardian’s account describes both the trend and its limits.
How theaters responded
Venues took different approaches, ranging from warnings about conduct to showings designed for fans who wanted a more vocal experience. These examples do not establish which approach worked best.

| Venue or response | What was reported |
|---|---|
| UK cinemas | The Guardian reported warnings that disruptive patrons could be ejected. |
| Cineworld special screenings | Cineworld offered designated showings where audiences could participate more vocally, with the message: “No mess please, just good clean fun.” |
| Township Theatre, Washington Township, New Jersey | After an “unfortunate situation” and reports of vandalism and complaints from other moviegoers, the theater restricted minors from attending without an adult. ABC News reported the measure. |
| Larry H. Miller Megaplex Theatres, Utah | Axios reported added security and a warning that disruptive patrons could be escorted out by police, while property damage could lead to charges. |
The US examples were local venue decisions, not a nationwide policy. A theater’s rules could differ from one location to another, so patrons should follow the instructions posted by the venue they attend.
What the director and Jack Black said
Director Jared Hess responded to the viral reactions in an ABC News interview published April 14, 2025. He said, “It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called,” and added, “I’m just glad people are making memories with their friends and families.” Those were Hess’s comments on the trend, not guidance about theater behavior or a venue policy. ABC News reported Hess’s remarks.

Also on April 14, the Los Angeles Times reported that Jack Black, disguising his voice as a theater spokesperson, told moviegoers: “for today’s presentation of ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ please no throwing popped corn.” The newspaper’s report presents the line as a humorous message to audiences, not an official theater announcement.
