After a clip from comedian Kunal Kamra’s show circulated online, a group of workers identified in news reports as Shiv Sena or Shinde-faction workers vandalised The Habitat studio in Mumbai on March 23, 2025. Police registered separate cases concerning the venue attack and Kamra’s remarks. Kamra refused to apologise and condemned the vandalism; the Bombay High Court later protected him from arrest on an interim basis while allowing the investigation to continue.
What Kamra said in the performance
Kamra performed a show titled Naya Bharat at The Habitat, a studio in Mumbai’s Khar area associated with the Intercontinental/UniContinental Hotel. Reports described a parody song and a jibe about Maharashtra leader Eknath Shinde’s political split and alignment with the BJP. The joke was widely understood as referring to Shinde, but India Today reported that the circulated clip did not explicitly name him. India Today; The Indian Express.
How the venue was attacked
On the night of March 23, 2025, a group described in contemporaneous reporting as Shiv Sena or Shinde-faction workers went to The Habitat after the performance clip spread online and ransacked the premises. News accounts reported that the studio was vandalised. These are descriptions in reporting, not findings that establish the responsibility of every person involved. India Today; The Indian Express.
Police cases and court action
Separate cases followed the remarks and the attack
Mumbai Police registered an FIR against Kamra after a complaint by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel, as well as a separate case concerning the vandalism. The Indian Express reported that the sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita cited against Kamra included 353(1)(b), 353(2) and 356(2). Those provisions appeared in a police case; an FIR records allegations and is not a finding of guilt. The Indian Express; Associated Press.

On April 25, 2025, the Bombay High Court granted Kamra protection from arrest while declining to halt the investigation. His petition sought to quash the FIR, but the interim protection did not itself quash the case or decide the allegations. The later disposition of that petition and the subsequent status of the investigations are not established in the reports cited here. The Indian Express; LiveLaw.
What Kamra, Shinde and Fadnavis said
Kamra refused to apologise
Kamra said he would cooperate with police and the courts, refused to apologise, and condemned the attack. In a statement reported by The Indian Express on March 25, he said: “I will not apologise. What I said is exactly what Mr Ajit Pawar (1st deputy CM) said about Mr Eknath Shinde (2nd Deputy CM). I don’t fear this mob & I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down.” He also said the venue was not responsible for his comedy or his words. The Indian Express.

Political responses differed in emphasis
Shinde said he did not support vandalism, but added, “Every action has a reaction,” in comments to BBC News Marathi reported by The Indian Express. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called for Kamra to apologise and warned against defamatory remarks; the Associated Press quoted him saying, “We respect freedom of expression, but recklessness will not be tolerated.” These were political responses, not court rulings on the case. After the attack, The Habitat announced a shutdown while it reconsidered how to offer a platform for free expression without putting its people or property at risk. The announcement establishes the venue’s position at that time, not whether it is operating today. The venue said it was “shocked, worried and extremely broken by the recent acts of vandalism targeting us.” Associated Press; The Indian Express.
