The Chimaera is the clearest Greek mythical creature associated with fire: ancient descriptions portray it breathing blazing fire. The fire-breathing Bulls of Colchis are another creature-level example, though the available account here gives little detail about them. Prometheus and Hestia are also closely associated with fire, but they are a Titan and a goddess—not fire-breathing creatures.

The Chimaera is the best-known fire-breathing monster

The Chimaera (also spelled Chimera or Khimaira) is the strongest answer to the question of which Greek mythical creature breathes fire. Hesiod’s Theogony, in a translation reproduced by Theoi, describes a hybrid creature with a lion at the front, a goat in the middle, and a dragon at the rear, breathing blazing fire. The British Museum’s collection description likewise calls the Chimaera a fire-breathing monster.

Its exact anatomy is not uniform across descriptions. The British Museum records versions with a lion’s forepart, a goat’s middle, and a dragon’s hind part, as well as versions with the heads of all three animals. Rather than treating one familiar illustration as the definitive ancient design, it is more accurate to say that the Chimaera is a hybrid of lion, goat, and dragon or serpent elements, with variation in how its body and heads are described. A reference summary also notes differences between Homer’s and Hesiod’s accounts and later classical treatments (Theoi’s Chimaera entry).

The British Museum says the monster caused havoc and was killed by Bellerophon. That detail belongs to the Chimaera’s mythic story; its defining connection to fire is that it breathes it.

Other Greek creatures directly associated with fire

The Bulls of Colchis

A Greek mythology bestiary also identifies the Bulls of Colchis as fire-breathing creatures (Theoi’s bestiary). The available reference does not establish further details here, so the reliable comparison is limited: they are another named fire-breathing creature, while the Chimaera has a more fully described hybrid form and a stronger basis in the cited ancient material.

Fire figures who are not fire-breathing creatures

Prometheus: fire given to mortals

Prometheus is associated with fire because he gave it to humanity, not because he breathes it. In Prometheus Bound, an English translation reproduced by Theoi has him say, “In addition, I gave them fire.” The exchange continues, “Yes, and from it they shall learn many arts” (Theoi’s text of Prometheus Bound). The wording is from a translated ancient play and may differ across editions.

Hestia: the hearth and altar flame

Hestia is the goddess associated with the hearth fire. A reference describes her as presiding over the altar flame and sacrificial feast (Theoi’s Hestia entry). This makes her central to Greek religious associations with fire, but she is a goddess rather than a mythical monster.

How to tell the different kinds of fire association apart

Figure What the fire connection is Category
Chimaera Described as breathing blazing fire Hybrid monster
Bulls of Colchis Listed as fire-breathing Creatures; further details are not stated in the cited bestiary
Prometheus Gives fire to mortals Titan
Hestia Associated with the hearth and altar flame Goddess

If the question is specifically “Which Greek monsters breathe fire?”, the Chimaera is the clearest answer, with the Bulls of Colchis as another named example. If it asks more broadly about Greek figures connected to fire, Prometheus and Hestia belong in the discussion for different reasons.
