Spoilers for the Squid Game Season 3 finale. Gi-hun’s “We are not horses, we are humans. And humans are…” is deliberately unfinished. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said he removed a more explicit conclusion because people are too complex to define in one categorical sentence. He chose to let Gi-hun’s sacrifice for Jun-hee’s baby express what the speech leaves unsaid. Actor Lee Jung-jae described the ending as an open conversation with viewers; his remark that “there was no right answer” referred to choosing how to perform the scene, not to a hidden official completion of the line.
What happens before Gi-hun’s speech?
In the finale, Gi-hun protects Jun-hee’s baby through the last game. At the decisive moment, he sacrifices himself so the baby can live and win. He then addresses the Front Man and the VIPs, insisting that the players are people, not horses.
Netflix Tudum identifies the child as Player 222 and reports that Hwang viewed the baby as a source of hope and a representative of the next generation. In Hwang’s explanation, the child also connects to Gi-hun recovering his humanity and conscience. The sacrifice gives the unfinished speech a concrete context: Gi-hun acts against the self-interest that has governed the game.
Why does Gi-hun leave “Humans are…” unfinished?
Hwang said he originally wrote a continuation about what people should do, how they should be, and how they might make the world better. But, as he worked on it, he concluded that people were too complex to sum up in a single categorical line. He also worried that spelling out a moral lesson would make the ending too narrow or didactic.

Instead, Hwang said the rest of what he wanted to say would be expressed through Gi-hun’s actions and sacrifice. The line does not have a canonical spoken completion. Its incompleteness is part of the point: the scene refuses to reduce humanity to a neat definition, while Gi-hun’s choice supplies an example of what care and responsibility can look like.
What does “There was no right answer” mean?
Lee Jung-jae’s remark about “no right answer” concerns the performance, not the meaning of the unfinished sentence. According to Capital FM’s July 4, 2025 report on Netflix’s Squid Game in Conversation, several takes were filmed, including versions in which Gi-hun cried. Lee said, “I felt like there was no right answer.” Hwang said the take selected for the finale matched what Gi-hun was feeling inside.

What the finale suggests about humanity
Hwang’s stated message extends beyond the wording of the speech: people have no future if they pursue only immediate self-interest and refuse restraint, sacrifice, shared effort, or the willingness to bear costs for others. Gi-hun’s decision to save the baby is the action through which the series gives that idea dramatic form.

That is the creator’s framing, not a compulsory single interpretation of the phrase. A viewer may read the unfinished words through the final choice, the game’s treatment of players as disposable, or the baby’s place as a symbol of the future. What the reported explanation rules out is treating any one proposed completion as the official answer.
