Before formatting, check that the specific TV, console, recorder, or other device that will access the drive supports exFAT.
Choose based on the computers and devices that will use the drive

There is no special file system required by YouTube. The choice is about file size and compatibility between the computers and devices handling the recording.
Why exFAT is the practical shared choice
For Windows-and-Mac transfers, exFAT combines broad computer compatibility with support for very large files. Microsoft’s exFAT specification says its 64-bit file-size field enables applications that depend on very large files. Microsoft’s comparison lists a maximum file size of 264−1 bytes for exFAT and NTFS; that is a filesystem limit, not a promise that every device or application can create files of that size.
FAT32 is the main format to avoid when a recording may exceed 4 GiB as a single file. A longer stream recording can run into that cap even when the external drive has plenty of free space.

Check the playback device before formatting
A format that works with your computer may not work with the television, console, camera, or recorder that needs to read the video. QNAP’s external-storage guidance specifically advises verifying device compatibility before selecting exFAT. Look up the exact model’s supported formats, rather than assuming all devices support the same ones.
Format the drive without losing files
- Back up anything you need to keep. Formatting can erase the drive’s existing contents.
- Choose the format for how you will use the drive. Select exFAT for large files shared between Windows and macOS, NTFS for a Windows-focused drive where its features matter, or APFS for Mac-only use.
- Use your operating system’s disk utility to format it. Exact menu paths, performance differences, and a required drive capacity are not specified here.
- Test the drive with the actual playback or recording device. Confirm it can see the drive and access a video before relying on it for a long recording or archive.
