The car changed as the show continued: the second series used a fuel-injected 308 GTSi, and from the fourth season Magnum drove a 308 GTS Quattrovalvole.
What Ferrari did Magnum P.I. drive?
The first-series Ferrari was a 1979 308 GTS. Ferrari describes it as a 3-litre V8 producing 240 hp in the U.S. version. The series was filmed in Hawaii across eight seasons, from 1980 to 1988, but the car was not the same 308 specification throughout.
How the Ferrari changed during the series
Ferrari’s history gives this on-screen chronology:
| Series period | Ferrari model | Engine detail stated by Ferrari |
|---|---|---|
| First series | 1979 308 GTS | 3-litre V8; 240 hp in U.S. specification |
| Second series | 308 GTSi | Fuel-injected; 214 hp |
| From the fourth season | 308 GTS Quattrovalvole | Four valves per cylinder; 240 hp |
The figures are Ferrari’s published specifications; the history page does not state the year those power figures were published. The change from carburettors to fuel injection followed emissions changes in 1980, particularly in the United States. The Quattrovalvole name identifies the later four-valve-per-cylinder engine.

What “GTS” means
The 308 GTS is the open-roof counterpart to the fixed-roof 308 GTB. Its removable targa-style roof made it the version suited to the show’s open-air look. Ferrari says the GTS joined the GTB in late 1977.
The 308 line ran for ten years and sold more than 6,000 cars, according to Ferrari; that is a total for the line, not a production count for GTS models alone. Ferrari also notes that the original 308 GTB was its first fibreglass-bodied production car. That body-material history should not be assumed to describe every GTS: the GTB’s fibreglass body gave way to steel and aluminium for U.S.-market cars in late 1976, and for European cars in the first half of 1977.

Is a 1979 308 GTS at auction the car from the show?
Not on the evidence of a model name or year alone. The available sources establish the Ferrari model and its series chronology, but do not establish a chassis-number match for an authenticated filming car or say where such a car is now.
RM Sotheby’s documented two separate 1979 308 GTS sales: one in Miami for $100,800 in 2026 and another in Dubai for $57,500 in 2024. Those are completed-sale prices for individual cars, not a market average, current asking prices, or valuations of a screen-used Ferrari. The auction records do not identify either car as a Magnum P.I. filming car: Miami 2026 sale and Dubai 2024 sale.
