The charge was not a murder conviction, and reports say Marsh already knew his father was adopted.
What did Rod Marsh discover?
In Season 3, Episode 2 of the Australian genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are?, Marsh looked into the circumstances that led to his father, Ken, being adopted. SBS’s episode synopsis describes him tracing records to piece together that history. A contemporaneous account says the program followed the family story from Geraldton to Fremantle Prison and connected Ken with his biological family. SBS episode listing · PerthNow, 9 November 2010
The reports say Marsh knew from an early age that Ken was adopted. The episode’s revelation was the surrounding family history, rather than the basic fact of adoption.
How did Ken Marsh come to be adopted?
PerthNow and The West Australian reported that Marsh’s grandmother, Amy Holgate, died after giving birth, leaving three children who were put up for adoption. That account places Ken’s adoption within a family tragedy that Marsh investigated on the program. These details are reported descriptions of the episode and family story; the available accounts do not reproduce the underlying archival records or a full program transcript. Who was Dan Marsh, and what happened in Derby?
The reporting identifies Dan Marsh as Rod Marsh’s great-grandfather. According to PerthNow’s account of the episode, Dan was involved in a fatal shooting during a scuffle in Derby, England. He was charged with manslaughter and sent to Western Australia in 1868. The report says he spent nearly five years in Fremantle Prison before settling in Geraldton.
The distinction matters: the source describes a manslaughter charge, not a murder conviction. It also says a coroner found no evidence indicating the gunman’s intentions. The records and full proceedings are not reproduced in the news account, so the circumstances should not be stated more definitively than the report allows. PerthNow, 9 November 2010

Was the adoption a secret from Rod Marsh?
Not according to the contemporaneous accounts: PerthNow reported that Marsh knew his father was adopted from an early age. The program investigated the family circumstances and biological connections behind that adoption. Calling the story “dark family secrets” reflects headline framing; it should not be taken as Marsh’s own description of the discovery.
