ESPN’s E60 documentary Save: The Katie Meyer Story looks back at the Stanford soccer captain’s life, her family’s search for answers and their advocacy after her death. Katie’s parents, Gina and Steve Meyer, took part; after watching the episode, they called it “really hard” and “beautiful.” In January 2026, the family and Stanford announced they had resolved their lawsuit and outlined several planned initiatives in Katie’s memory.

What the ESPN documentary covers

Save: The Katie Meyer Story is an E60 episode reported by former U.S. soccer player and ESPN journalist Julie Foudy. ESPN announced it on May 1, 2025. The episode uses interviews, archival footage and personal stories to explore Meyer’s life and impact, her family’s effort to find answers, and the disciplinary process she faced in her final year. It also examines the California law passed in her name. ESPN’s announcement names Meyer’s parents, Gina and Steve, and her sisters, Sam and Siena, as participants; Jennifer Karson-Strauss directed and produced the episode.

Meyer was a Stanford women’s soccer goalkeeper and captain who helped the team win the 2019 national championship. ESPN says she died by suicide in 2022, three months shy of graduation. The documentary is a retrospective and advocacy story; it should not be read as a diagnosis or proof that any single event caused her death.

What Katie Meyer’s family said about watching it

In a message published by Katie’s Save, Gina and Steve Meyer said they watched the episode for the first time when it aired. “Just like everyone else – we were able to watch E60’s ‘Save: The Katie Meyer Story’ for the very first time when it aired May 10th. It was really hard. It was beautiful. There were many tears.”

What happened in the lawsuit—and what the parties announced in 2026

The Meyer family filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Stanford in November 2022. The family’s claims were allegations, not adjudicated findings. In its contemporaneous response, Stanford disputed that the university was responsible for Meyer’s death. Stanford said its Office of Community Standards had reviewed a complaint and determined that it met the threshold to proceed to a hearing. Stanford’s November 25, 2022 statement describes the university’s account.

On January 26, 2026, Stanford and the Meyer family jointly announced a resolution. Their statement said: “Stanford and the family of Katie Meyer are pleased to have reached a resolution in the lawsuit that was filed against the university following Katie’s tragic death in 2022.” It did not state a monetary amount. The parties announced four measures:

  • A student-athlete mental-health and well-being initiative at the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance, developed in collaboration with the family.
  • An annual Katie Meyer Leadership Award at Stanford.
  • Stanford’s adoption of the principles of Katie Meyer’s Law in its Office of Community Standards process.
  • Retirement of Meyer’s No. 19 jersey.

The joint statement said further details would come later in 2026. The measures were announced plans; that statement does not establish that they have all been fully implemented. See the January 26 joint statement for the parties’ terms. The Associated Press reported the resolution and initiative the following day: AP’s January 27, 2026 report.

Katie Meyer’s Law and Stanford’s announced policy change

The California law and Stanford’s promised policy response are related but not identical. The Associated Press reports that Katie Meyer’s Law, signed in 2024, permits students in disciplinary proceedings at California public colleges and universities to choose an adviser to help them navigate the process. Stanford’s joint statement said the university would adopt the law’s principles in its own Office of Community Standards process. That is a Stanford commitment described in the 2026 statement, not a claim that the statute itself covers every institution in the same way.

Family advocacy and support

Katie’s Save describes its mission as promoting mental health, protecting students and preventing suicide through systemic change at colleges and universities. The organization’s site provides information about Katie Meyer’s Law and its advocacy work, and lists the 988 Lifeline for people in the United States seeking emotional support or concerned about someone.
