After John Mayall died on July 22, 2024, aged 90, Eric Clapton paid tribute to the musician who, he said, helped keep him from leaving music and gave him a place in the Bluesbreakers. Clapton called Mayall “my mentor and a surrogate father, too.”
What did Eric Clapton say about John Mayall?
In a video tribute reported by Guitar World on July 25, 2024, Clapton remembered Mayall as a teacher whose influence went beyond guitar technique. “He taught me all I really know and gave me the courage and enthusiasm to express myself without fear or without limit,” Clapton said.
He also described a musical freedom he learned from Mayall: “He taught me that it was okay just to play the music you wanted to play without dressing it up or making anybody else like it.”
How did Mayall help Clapton at a career crossroads?
Clapton recalled that he was about 18 or 19 and thinking of quitting music when Mayall found him, welcomed him into his home and invited him to join the Bluesbreakers. As Clapton put it, “He found me and took me into his home and asked me to join his band,” after which he learned from Mayall’s technique and his commitment to playing the music he loved.

Mayall’s record collection was another part of that education: Clapton said he used it to study Chicago blues. The account presents Mayall’s support as both personal and practical—an invitation to join a working band, alongside the example and records that helped shape Clapton’s playing.

Why Clapton’s tribute matters
Mayall died at 90 in July 2024, and Clapton’s remembrance centers on the younger musician he had been: uncertain about continuing, then taken in and encouraged to develop his own voice. His words connect that personal turning point to a specific musical apprenticeship—learning technique, hearing Chicago blues through Mayall’s records and being told that the music did not need to be dressed up for anyone else.
