Slater called him family and said she was grateful she had been able to say goodbye. The available reporting does not establish a separate public response from her at the time of his diagnosis announcement.
What did Emma Slater say about James Van Der Beek?
After news of Van Der Beek’s death, Slater wrote: “I’m so devastated. He is and will always be family to me ❤️ love you so much, James. The man that you are, you can be proud of. So grateful that I got to be there to say goodbye to you.” Parade reported her tribute on February 11, 2026.
That message was a posthumous tribute, not a statement about his initial cancer disclosure. The distinction matters because the phrasing of the question can make it sound as though Slater publicly reacted when he first announced his diagnosis; the cited coverage does not verify such a response.
When did Van Der Beek announce his cancer diagnosis?
Van Der Beek publicly disclosed that he had colorectal cancer on November 3, 2024. In a statement reported by CBS News, he said, “I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family.” CBS News also reported that he had told People there was “reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.” CBS News’ report attributes that comment to his People interview.
