On Feb. 17, 2022, Elon Musk posted a meme that used Adolf Hitler to mock Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Its punchline was “I had a budget.” The post was later deleted. It appeared amid Canadian authorities’ efforts to block cryptocurrency donations to anti-vaccine protesters, but the available reporting does not establish Musk’s full motive or why he deleted it.
What was in Musk’s tweet?
The meme showed Hitler beneath the line “Stop comparing me to Justin Trudeau” and followed it with “I had a budget.” The comparison invoked Hitler to make a political joke about Trudeau; it was not a substantive historical argument. The Guardian reported that Musk later deleted the post, but did not establish the exact time it was removed.
What was happening when he posted it?
The tweet appeared as Canadian authorities had ordered banks to block cryptocurrency donations to anti-vaccine protesters. That news provides the immediate context reported at the time. It does not, on its own, prove that the policy was Musk’s sole reason for posting the meme.
How did Holocaust institutions and Jewish organizations respond?
Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum
The Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum objected to using Hitler’s image for the joke. In a statement posted by its official account on Feb. 17, 2022, the museum said: “Using the image of Adolf Hitler & therefore exploiting the tragedy of all people who suffered, were humiliated, tortured & murdered by the totalitarian regime of Nazi Germany created by him is sad & disturbing. It disrespects the memory of all victims & hurts many people.”

The Guardian reported the museum’s estimate that 1.1 million people were killed at Auschwitz-Birkenau. It clarified that a figure of 960,000 referred specifically to Jewish victims, rather than the total number of people killed at the site.
American Jewish Committee
The American Jewish Committee called the tweet unacceptable and demanded an apology, according to The Guardian. The report does not name an individual spokesperson for that reaction.

The Guardian reported that Musk did not respond to either the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum or the American Jewish Committee. It also reported that he later posted a tweet suggesting followers read a book about Nazi Germany’s economic history. The cited account does not establish that this post was an apology or a direct explanation of the meme.
