The remark was a clear statement of intention at the time, but it does not establish that she has withdrawn—or will permanently withdraw—from all public life.
What did Ellen DeGeneres say?
At a July 1, 2024, audience Q&A after a show in Santa Rosa, California, an audience member asked whether DeGeneres might return to movies or try Broadway. DeGeneres replied: This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done.
TV Insider reported the exchange, and Variety also quoted her answer in a July 11 report. TV Insider’s account and Variety’s report place the remark in the context of her final tour.
Her words point to an intended end to entertainment work after the special. The broader phrase “exit from the public eye” goes further: the quote does not say she would stop every kind of public appearance or activity, and it cannot by itself establish what she did later.
Which Netflix special did she mean?
She was referring to Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval. Netflix announced on September 19, 2024, that it would be her final stand-up special, then released it globally on September 24. Netflix’s announcement and its special recap identify the release and its status as her final stand-up special.

The special was filmed at Minneapolis’s Orpheum Theatre in August 2024, according to The Washington Post’s review. It arrived after The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended in 2022, following 19 seasons, as Netflix’s show history notes.
What does “I’m done” establish—and what doesn’t it?
The chronology matters. DeGeneres made the statement in July, before the special’s September release; Netflix later promoted For Your Approval as her final stand-up special. Together, those facts support describing it as her announced farewell to stand-up and her stated plan to stop appearing in entertainment after the special.

They do not verify a permanent retreat from every form of public life, nor confirm her present-day plans. A statement about what someone intends to do is not the same as independently verified evidence of what happened afterward. The available reports establish the remark and the special’s release, not a lasting disappearance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why was the special framed as a farewell?
The special followed the end of DeGeneres’s daytime program and the controversy over workplace allegations. The Washington Post describes her discussing the show’s ending, her experience of being “kicked out of show business,” and her own view of her role as a boss. Those comments are her account; they should not be treated as an independent resolution of the allegations. The paper also noted that she did not directly address every rumor about her behavior. The Post’s review provides context for how the special addressed the backlash.

One line from the special captures the personal tone of that discussion: I’m happy not being a boss or a brand or a billboard, just a person.
That describes how DeGeneres presented her feelings in the special; it is not confirmation that she has left public life altogether.
