Earth-828 is the alternate universe where The Fantastic Four: First Steps takes place—and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige says choosing it is one of the film’s references to Jack Kirby. The film’s tribute also reaches its visual design and credits. The official material confirms the Kirby connection, but does not say that “828” specifically refers to Kirby’s August 28 birthday.
What does Earth-828 mean in The Fantastic Four: First Steps?
Earth-828 is the film’s alternate-universe setting, not simply a new label for the main MCU world. D23 describes it as a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic universe where the Fantastic Four are already famous. The story begins four years after Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm were exposed to cosmic rays. They are public figures who protect and inspire their world, as well as a family facing a threat from Galactus.

Marvel’s official film listing also describes the movie as 1960s-inspired and retro-futuristic. That establishes its broad setting, while D23 provides the specific description of Earth-828 as the team’s alternate universe.
Is Earth-828 a reference to Jack Kirby?
Yes. Feige directly connects the setting to the tribute. In a Walt Disney Company interview, he said: “This movie features many references to Jack Kirby, from being set on Earth-828 to including his quote in the credits.” That makes the broad point clear: Earth-828 is one of the film’s deliberate Kirby references.
#1 Best Overall
Kirby co-created the Fantastic Four with Stan Lee. Disney dates the publication of Fantastic Four #1 to 1961, placing the film’s tribute in the context of the creators’ history with the team.
How does the film pay tribute to Kirby beyond Earth-828?
Feige points to the film’s imagery as another part of the homage. He says Galactus’ appearance draws directly on Kirby’s designs, and that the filmmakers shaped details inside Galactus’ world ship to feel more like Kirby’s work. He also identifies the credits quotation as Kirby’s sentiment that he put part of himself into every character he created.
D23 adds that production designer Kasra Farahani drew on Kirby’s work and on the visual language of 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film’s retro-futuristic look therefore has more than one influence, while Kirby’s role as a source of inspiration is explicitly acknowledged by Feige.
Does 828 refer to Jack Kirby’s birthday?
The official Disney material cited here confirms that Earth-828 is a Kirby reference, but it does not explain the specific digits as a nod to his August 28 birthday. Those are separate claims: Feige confirms the tribute; the birthday interpretation is not established by his statement or the other official material cited here. Without a direct attribution from a named filmmaker or production source, it is more accurate to describe Earth-828 as a Kirby reference without stating that the number encodes his birthday.

Why Kirby’s connection to the Fantastic Four matters
Kirby’s role is not an incidental detail: he co-created the team with Lee, and their first Fantastic Four comic appeared in 1961, according to Disney. Feige frames the movie’s references as a way to bring more attention to Kirby, calling him one of the most influential and greatest artists and creators of the 20th century, but saying he is not as well-known as he should be. He described the film as “a step in the direction to fix that.”
D23’s feature on The Fantastic Four: First Steps covers the film’s world and design influences. The Walt Disney Company’s interview with Kevin Feige contains his explanation of the Kirby references and credits tribute, alongside Disney’s account of Lee and Kirby’s history with the comic.
