Charles Spencer’s 1997 funeral eulogy praised Diana’s compassion and public work while insisting that her humor and human complexity should not be erased by idealization. In interviews about his 2026 memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Spencer revisited the speech and said its closing promise that Diana would not be forgotten was also a response to a remark he says he heard from then-Prince Charles. That private exchange is disputed; the eulogy itself is a public, published record.

What Spencer said in Diana’s 1997 eulogy

Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother, delivered her funeral eulogy at Westminster Abbey on 6 September 1997. He spoke as a member of her family during a period of national mourning, but the address was not simply a tribute to a public icon. It described a sister whose compassion and influence were inseparable from her wit, flaws, and individuality. The Guardian’s archival publication of the eulogy preserves the speech; ABC also reproduced it in a 2026 transcript with Spencer’s later annotations.

The difference between those records matters. The Guardian’s earlier publication gives readers the words Spencer delivered in 1997. ABC’s later transcript pairs the address with his retrospective comments, which explain how he now understands particular lines. The speech is the primary public text; the annotations and interviews are Spencer’s later account of its context and intent.

Compassion and public work

Spencer recalled Diana’s attention to people affected by HIV/AIDS, homelessness, leprosy, and landmines. He presented this work as evidence of her ability to connect with people who were often marginalized or overlooked. The eulogy’s emphasis was on the human attention behind her public role, rather than a list of honors or institutional achievements.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That emphasis helped make the speech personal as well as public. Spencer was not describing Diana only through causes or accomplishments; he was recalling the way she directed her attention toward people facing hardship. In his account, her public impact arose from that capacity for connection. Those themes also explain why the eulogy’s portrait is broader than a summary of charitable work: it presents compassion as part of her character, not merely a public résumé.

Why he rejected sainthood

Spencer warned against turning Diana into a saint: “There is a temptation to rush to canonise your memory, there is no need to do so.” In the lines that follow, he argues that idealization risks losing her mischievous humor and the ordinary human qualities that made her recognizable to family and friends. His tribute asked listeners to remember a complicated person, not a flawless symbol.

This is an important qualification in a funeral address that also praised Diana’s influence. Spencer did not suggest that her compassion or public work should be minimized. Rather, he cautioned that praise could become so absolute that it obscured the person being praised. The speech holds those ideas together: Diana mattered for what she did and for the distinctive, human qualities that a simplified image might leave out.

The “most hunted person” line

The address’s most enduring description called Diana “the most hunted person of the modern age.” Spencer used the phrase while criticizing relentless press attention and the conditions surrounding his sister’s public life. It was a condemnation of the pressure she faced, not a neutral description of celebrity. The wording belongs to the 1997 eulogy; Spencer’s later interviews add his explanation of its surrounding context and his intentions for the speech.

In other words, the phrase belongs to a broader argument about the circumstances of Diana’s public life. It should not be detached from Spencer’s criticism of the press and treated simply as a dramatic label. The line is part of the eulogy’s account of the pressures surrounding her, while the exact phrase remains a memorable piece of the speech’s public text.

A promise about William and Harry

Near the close, Spencer pledged that Diana’s “blood family” would try to continue her “imaginative” approach to raising William and Harry. He said the family would help protect the boys from being overwhelmed by duty and tradition, so they could have room to live their own lives. The promise cast Diana’s legacy not only as public compassion but also as a way of parenting.

This part of the address shifts from recalling Diana to speaking about what her family would do next. Spencer’s pledge was that the boys would not be submerged by expectations attached to duty and tradition. It gives the eulogy a forward-looking element: he connected remembrance to a practical family commitment to continue what he described as Diana’s way of guiding her sons. The speech does not offer a detailed account of how that promise would be carried out; its point is the pledge itself.

How Spencer reinterpreted the speech in 2026

In a 2026 ABC interview, Spencer said that both the eulogy and his memoir “speak on Diana’s behalf.” As he revisited the address, he explained that its final assurance about Diana’s enduring memory was intended as a deliberate counterpoint to words he says he heard from then-Prince Charles before the funeral. EL PAÍS also reported Spencer describing the closing words as a direct rebuttal.

This is Spencer’s explanation of his intent, offered years after he delivered the speech. The published eulogy establishes what he said publicly in 1997; his interviews establish how he now interprets it. The later account supplies claimed private context, not independent verification of that context.

The two perspectives are related, but they are not the same kind of evidence. In 1997, Spencer addressed mourners in a public ceremony and made a promise about Diana’s memory. In 2026, he described the private meaning he says he attached to that promise. His retrospective explanation adds context to the words without changing what the public speech says on its own. Readers can therefore consider both: the address as delivered and Spencer’s present account of the intention behind its closing lines.

Spencer’s later statement, “She’s not been forgotten,” is his reflection on how that promise has endured. It is not a measure of what every person remembers or thinks. Its significance in the interview is personal: he sees the continued remembrance of Diana as evidence that the pledge he made in the eulogy was borne out.

What Spencer says happened before the funeral—and what is disputed

Spencer has said that, during an argument about whether William and Harry should walk behind their mother’s coffin, then-Prince Charles told him, “We’ll forget her soon enough.” Spencer presents his eulogy’s closing promise as a response to that remark. The reported Palace response, carried in ABC’s 23 September 2026 interview, questioned how fraternal grief could affect reason, judgment, and memory.

The public record establishes that Spencer made this allegation and that the Palace response was reported. It does not independently establish that the private exchange occurred as he recalls it. The quotation should therefore be read as Spencer’s disputed recollection, not as a verified statement by Charles.

That distinction is especially important because the disputed remark supplies the private context Spencer now gives to a very public line. The eulogy can be checked against its published text; a reported conversation between two people cannot be verified from the speech itself. When summarizing the episode, the careful formulation is that Spencer has said this was the exchange, followed by the reported Palace response. It would go beyond the available record to present the words as independently confirmed or to decide which recollection is correct.

Why Spencer wrote Swan Song: Diana, My Sister

Spencer told ABC that he began considering the book after receiving the usual requests for interviews ahead of the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death, which falls on 31 August 2027. He decided to set out his account himself. In EL PAÍS, he described the memoir as a brother’s account of Diana and, to a large extent, his own story.

Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, published in 2026, extends the perspective that appeared in the eulogy: Diana as a family member as well as a public figure. It is Spencer’s fuller account, not an independent adjudication of every claim concerning Diana or the royal family. His interviews also make clear why the book returns to the funeral speech: he sees the address and memoir as connected acts of speaking for his sister.

The timing is tied in Spencer’s explanation to the requests he received in advance of the anniversary, rather than to an independently established reason for publishing. The 30th anniversary falls on 31 August 2027; the book and interviews appeared in 2026. Those dates help explain the “why now?” question without requiring readers to treat the memoir as a final or neutral account of every aspect of Diana’s life.

For readers who want Spencer’s extended brother’s perspective, the memoir is the direct physical-book fit. Its value for this topic is that it gathers his account and gives him room to revisit the eulogy and the family relationship behind it. That does not make the memoir an independent source for contested private conversations; those claims still need to be attributed to him and considered alongside the reported Palace response.

What Spencer says Diana’s legacy means

Spencer’s public remarks return to three themes: compassionate attention to people facing hardship, an insistence that Diana remain human rather than idealized, and a family commitment to give her sons room beyond inherited duty. His later claim that the closing promise answered a private remark adds another layer to the eulogy, but it does not replace the words audiences heard in 1997.

In ABC’s 2026 interview, Spencer said of the promise that Diana would be remembered: “She’s not been forgotten.” That is his assessment of the pledge’s endurance, not a measurable claim about every person’s memory or opinion. Keeping the speech and its later interpretation distinct makes the legacy he describes clearer: a public tribute grounded in the text, alongside a personal recollection that remains contested.

The most useful comparison is therefore between the speech’s public themes and Spencer’s later account of the private context he says shaped it. The 1997 address describes Diana’s compassion, humor, complexity, press exposure, and family role. His 2026 interviews add his explanation of why he chose the closing words and why he now sees the eulogy and memoir as speaking for his sister. One is a contemporaneous public address; the other is a later interpretation of that address.

Spencer’s remarks also frame legacy in terms of memory and family rather than a single verdict on Diana. He asks readers to retain the public work without turning her into a saint, and to remember the private qualities that made her his sister. The speech’s promise about William and Harry gives that remembrance a family dimension. His memoir offers a fuller version of his perspective, while the published eulogy remains the clearest record of what he said at the funeral.

Why did Spencer revisit the eulogy in 2026?

In interviews about Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Spencer said the book and eulogy both speak on Diana’s behalf. He explained that the speech’s closing promise about her enduring memory was intended as a rebuttal to a remark he says he heard from then-Prince Charles before the funeral.

Did then-Prince Charles say, “We’ll forget her soon enough”?

That is Spencer’s account of a private exchange during an argument about whether William and Harry should walk behind their mother’s coffin. ABC also reported the Palace’s response, which questioned how fraternal grief could affect reason, judgment, and memory. The public reporting establishes the competing statements, not the truth of the private conversation.

Why did Spencer write Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, and what perspective does it offer?

Spencer told ABC he began considering the book after receiving interview requests ahead of the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death on 31 August 2027, and decided to set out his account himself. The Bottom Line

Spencer’s 1997 eulogy is a public record of his praise for Diana’s compassion, humor, and individuality, as well as his promise about her sons. His 2026 interviews add his explanation that the closing assurance about her memory answered a private remark he attributes to then-Prince Charles. That exchange remains disputed, so the speech and Spencer’s later recollection should be read as distinct parts of his account.
